Modifications
Modifications are buffs, debuffs, and statuses added to players, teams, ballparks, and the league as a whole. They give various effects and last for varying amounts of time. Active modifications are visible on a player's bio, a team's roster window, a team's ballpark's window, and the league's info page.
Overview
A modification grants various effects to its holder. Some are beneficial, some are detrimental, and some simply work as indicators. Some modifications also have mysterious effects which are not immediately obvious, such with Observed when it was first introduced. A player's modifications will be carried with them even if they switch teams, while team modifications will take effect for every player currently in that team regardless of when they joined.
Modifications can be obtained from a variety of sources. Recorded sources of modifications include Decrees, Blessings, Wills, Weathers, Items, as well as various events that happen during a Blaseball game. Some modifications can also spawn related modifications, such as how a player with Fire Eater will have the modification Magmatic after they have eaten fire.
Each modification has a set Duration. These Durations dictate when a modification will be automatically removed but, as some modifications can be removed through specific events, it is not necessarily an indicator of how long they will actually last. For example, despite having its Duration set as Permanent, Magmatic will usually quickly wear off within a single game (as it is removed after a single hit). Some Permanent modifications may also disappear for reasons yet unknown, as is the case for Elsewhere and Scattered.
During The Expansion Era, Player and team-based modifications could be semi-reliably gained or changed through Wills. Reform replaced one permanent modification with another, Enrich granted a team various seasonal modifications, and Trust or Alternate Trust gave a single player a specific modification. Ballpark modifications could be gained through Renovations every Latesiesta.
Prior to The Return(s), each modification had an associated icon. However, starting at The Return(s), modifications no longer had associated icons.
History
Modifications were first introduced at end of Season 4 through decrees, with the first modifications being Alternate and Targeted Shame. Since then, various modifications have been granted through various means.
Day 45 of Season β5 introduced the first weather-induced modification, with Reverberated granted to Don Mitchell during Reverb weather after "reverberations reached dangerous levels".
The first item-induced modification was introduced at end of Season 5 through blessings granting the items Fireproof Jacket and Noise-Cancelling Headphones, containing the modifications Fireproof and Soundproof, respectively.
Blood type modifications was first introduced with the Astroturf blessing during the Season β8 elections, which gave every member of the Boston Flowers the Grass blood type and giving the team the ability Growth. Numerous other blood types have been given out through blessings since then. It should be noted that, like team modifications in general and despite their origin, blood type modifications apply to every member of the team regardless of their blood type.
Evolution-based modifications first appeared after the passing of Based Evolution decree during the Season β12 elections, immediately giving unique modifications to five teams who have gained three championship wins. This includes the four teams that arrived after the Descension (Atlantis Georgias, Ohio Worms, Core Mechanics, and Baltimore Crabs), along with the Hades Tigers who won their third championship during that very season.
Duration
Known durations are as follows:
- Permanent modifications are never removed automatically.
- Item modifications are removed if the Item giving the mod is lost or loses its last pip of durability.
- Season modifications are removed after each season's Internet Series.
- Weekly modifications are removed after every 9th game of the season.
- Game modifications are removed after each game.
