Seperating Beta and "Current Sim" Modifications

4
BoofTroupe (talkcontribs)

Is it worth renaming this page to Beta Modifications and starting a new page for the modifications seen in the current iteration of blaseball?

KCToxic (talkcontribs)

I think it's worth perhaps creating a Modifications/Beta page and moving the Beta-only information (such as Beta-only mods, durations, history, etc.) there and linking back to it from the main Modifications page. Then, the Modifications page could be retooled to keep relevant history, the functions we know of, and mods we know are in the current sim in a mod table.

As far as I'm aware, only Template:ModLink uses this page for its function (to redirect to a mod's respective table entry), but I think that one's due to be reworked to link to a mod's proper page now that every beta mod has its own article (as will every new mod).

FifthBaseQueen (talkcontribs)

I think it's a good idea to start a new page (or pretty much start a new page) for modifications, especially since the new ones are in a different format.

KCToxic (talkcontribs)

I think it's best to retain this page for its name and subpage the old stuff, but it's ultimately going to look a lot different format-wise because mods don't seem to have all the same parts (at least right now, riv mod images i miss you).

Updating Modifications to their own pages

1
UnabashedlyRose (talkcontribs)

Good evening beautiful people who watch this page - we're looking at setting up individual pages for mods, and with almost 300 in the game now we're looking for some help!

The basic idea is to set up pages for mods (or groups of mods in the case of things like Ego) and give more detail on them than this page currently provides - there's a sign up sheet here if you want to volunteer for one.

I'll keep my notifications on for this page so if you have any questions you can ask either here, or on the Discord, whichever is easier!

Adding an Overview section

5
PseudoMon (talkcontribs)

This edit is a bit major so I figured I'll propose it here first. At the moment the first thing a reader will see in this page is the History section, which is painfully outdated and frankly of absolutely no help to new/current Blaseball fans. I propose to replace it with a section giving general overview of modifications as it stands at the moment. This section shouldn't be updated that often, but in the event that Blaseball Happens, updating it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Here's my proposed edit. For completion's sake, I've also rewrote the History section to be shorter and more general, instead of removing it entirely. It's still outdated, though. I'm still not sure what else should be explained there without bloating up the page.

Overview

A modification grants various effects to its holder. Some are beneficial, some are detrimental, and some simply work as indicators. Some modifications also have mysterious effects which are not immediately obvious, such as the case with Observed. Player modification will affect that player only and will be carried with them if they switched team, while team modifications will take effect for every player currently in that team regardless of when they joined.

Modifications can be obtained from a variety of sources. Recorded sources of modifications include Decrees, Blessings, Wills, Weathers, Items, as well as various events that happen during a Blaseball game. Some modifications can also spawn related modifications, such as how a player with Fire Eater will have the modification Magmatic after they have eaten fire.

Each modification has a set Duration. These Durations dictate when the modification will be removed, but is not necessarily an indicator of how long they will last. For example, despite having its Duration set as Permanent, Magmatic will usually quickly wear off within a single game. Some Permanent modifications may also disappear for reasons yet unknown, such as the case for Elsewhere and Scattered.

Player and team-based modifications can be reliably gained or changed through Wills. Reform can replace a modification with Permanent duration, Enrich can grant a team various seasonal modifications, and Trust or Alternate Trust can give a single player a specific beneficial modification. Ballpark modifications can be gained through Renovations every Latesiesta.

History

Modifications were first introduced at end of Season 4 through decrees, with the first modifications being Alternate and Targeted Shame. Since then, various modifications have been granted through various means.

Day 45 of Season 5 introduced the first weather-induced modification, with Reverberated granted to Don Mitchell during Reverb weather after "reverberations reached dangerous levels".

The first item-induced modification was introduced at end of Season 5, through blessings granting the items Fireproof Jacket and Noise-Cancelling Headphones, containing the modifications Fireproof and Soundproof, respectively.

Pokeylope (talkcontribs)

Looks good to me, aside from a few grammar issues (e.g. "Some modification" in the first paragraph, "Each modifications" in the second). You may also want to make the modification names into links, like {{ModLink|Fire Eater}}, and link the items to the Armor page.

FAE (talkcontribs)

There's an extra | character in front of the first "Weathers" link. Magmatic and Wills are also linked twice. I'd suggest switching "after they ate fire" to "after they eat fire".

Should the Modification names be italicized? I don't see that stylization used on player pages. If it's not supposed to be standard practice, it's probably best not to italicize them on the Modifications page, as people may then get the impression that that's how they should be stylized everywhere.

The changes are looking great!

Pokeylope (talkcontribs)

Other pages sometimes put modification names in bold, but it's not universal. I would just leave them unstyled.

PseudoMon (talkcontribs)

Ok, thanks guys! I've added the Overview section to the page. Feel free to further edit the page if you feel the need.

Dedicated Sections for each mod-type containing explanations and history of their effects

PseudoMon (talkcontribs)

There's A LOT of modifications now, and I feel like it's starting to not make sense to just list them all as if they're all in effect all the time. The History section is also wildly outdated now, only explaining some mods which have long become irrelevant.

As I mentioned 3 months ago in this Talk page, I think it'll be better if we categorize the modifications and then make a subsection on each. Today I actually sat down and started categorizing them. Here they are (there's, uhh, a lot. Sorry if I'm making it hard to scroll).

General buffs can probably be split between which more likely came from items and which from e.g. Enrich Will, but I'm still not sure how to split them. There are some which I'm not entirely sure where they came from, which I put in the ??? section at the bottom. Please enlighten me if you do know about them! And let me know if I miss any mod.

One other category that is not listed in this page but are officially modifications are the active rules found in the league info tab (Currently embedded above the league standings, found by clicking on the "more info" button

Active Rules 1. Eat the Rich 2. Party Time (which oddly enough shares a name with the team mod but has a different description) 3. Wild Cards 4. Based Evolution 5. Free Wills 6. All You Can Eat 7. Community Chest.

All of these are listed as permeant modifications

Pokeylope (talkcontribs)

I haven't added the league mods yet because, unlike all the other modifications, several of them use PNG icons instead of SVG and thus will require some changes to the modification templates. It shouldn't be too difficult, but it's not currently high priority.

XYZZY (talkcontribs)

They could still be included for the sake of completeness, albeit without the icons which can be added when people get around to it. Do you know if there is a consensus about what to do about the two different party time modifications? If the rule mod party time is added to the current table, (as in, if they are inputted into the table pending all these changes), would it be better to put them in a different row as the Team Mod or in the same row but with spacing between them? (i.e. a separate bullet points for the two)

as a side note, it might not be a bad idea to preserve the full table in a separate page via a move, that way if anyone wants a quick reference to all the modifications they still have one but it is out of the main parts of the wiki that people use for quick references.

Adding "Perk"

Summary by Amazingakita

added perk

Amazingakita (talkcontribs)

Hey, I know for some things, info goes on the talk page. For this, the "Perk" modification given to the Inter-Xpressos reads: "This player has been rewarded Percolated energy". I think the formatting would be like:

|- style="text-align:center;" | |Perk |Player |This player has been rewarded Percolated energy. |Permanent |Winning the Coffee Cup

Nesblitt (talkcontribs)

Thanks for bringing it up. We're still working out some kinks with the new template to display the icons and working on a redesign to make this page more usable.

Amazingakita (talkcontribs)

hey! just checking in on this one, am I okay to add this now?

Nesblitt (talkcontribs)

This got buried under the siesta plans--feel free to add it, but we are still going to shuffle the page around soon.

Redefine some Modifications as Player

1
Wellisss (talkcontribs)

Many modifications (list below) have their in-game descriptions imply they usually would be on players. However, they are listed as Team Modifications due to only having appeared on Teams. Reclassifying them as Player Modifications seems appropriate, adding a section about Player Modifications on teams.

Change duration "Permanent" to "indefinite" on applicible modifications

1
Summary by Fezboy

I'm stupid, i didn't realize that "permanent" was an official game band term.

Closed

Fezboy (talkcontribs)

I don't know about others, but for the "Elsewhere" modifier, "permanent" doesn't seem like a good descriptor, as players do come back, they're not permanently gone. A better term would be "indefinite" as we don't know how long they're gone for, but we do know that they will most likely come back.

I've refrained from changing it as i don't know what other modifiers would also benefit from this change, and want to keep it consistent.

Coffee Cup Players

1
XYZZY (talkcontribs)

I have checked out a few of the player pages for people on the coffee cup guest teams that aren't in the league (using their wiki page links), and they all seem to have the idol immune modification. Is there an official explanation for this that we can use in the table?

Amazingakita (talkcontribs)

is the meant to be in alphabetical order or another order or another order? things like party time being way down the bottom instead of with the other Ps was surprising

ItsSteve (talkcontribs)

In theory yes, the big table should be alphabetical. However, the table is so damn big and unruly now that we need to redesign it. For now, sometimes we leave certain things in a different order based on their relevance to the immediately preceding entries.

If you are interested us helping maintain or even improve this page, please reach out on Discord! We’d love to get some hands working on this one.

Specific page/section for some modifications

4
PseudoMon (talkcontribs)

Just gonna throw this here for now, but should we have specific page/section to better explain some modifications? I remember when I just got into Blaseball I'd try to look up what Shelled means and it just links to the Modifications page and I have to scroll through the entire table to find what I want... and then I'll have to scroll through it again when I forgot.

I'm thinking at least those to do with shelling (Shelled, Honey-Roasted), peanuts (Superallergic, Superyummy), Day X (Squiddish, Squiddest, Subjection, Liberated, Receiver, Saboteur), and Coffee Cup (incl. Percolated) should have their own section to better explain them.

Now that I think about it, it'll be better if the page have more explanations about each modifier in general (instead of just a table with in-game explanation), but the ones I mentioned are the more lore-important ones.

ItsSteve (talkcontribs)

This is a good idea, and has been something we've wanted to work on at the admin level. It just keeps slipping past. The Mods page as it is is very difficult to navigate because it's just so large. Something cleaner and more precise would be desirable. Would you be interested in helping with that in the coming weeks/months? If so, please reach out on Discord, and we can get in touch more easily.

PseudoMon (talkcontribs)

I'm rather busy these days (hence why I'm just throwing this out here for now ;;). But I'll pop over to the Discord when I have more free time hopefully later this month.

ItsSteve (talkcontribs)

No problem! Thank you for bringing it to my attention again to think about regardless.
