Curses

Curses are caused by the Destruction team Modification and inflicts the Flinch and Mild curses to teams that lose to that team.

Destruction

Effect

Destruction is a Team Modification that causes any team that loses against that team to be Cursed by giving their players modifications that hinder their play. The two times it has activated it gave the opposing team's Lineup the Flinch modification, and their rotation the Mild modification.

History

Destruction has only been seen on the SHELLED ONE'S PODS, and was first seen on Day X of Season β9. It has activated twice - once in Season 9 against the Charleston Shoe Thieves, and once in Season β10 against the Baltimore Crabs.

The original description of Destruction indicated that "Teams with Destructions will add 5 Curses to their Opponent when defeating them in battle" despite the fact that only two curses have ever been seen and they were distributed to more than five players[1].

Flinch

Effect

Batters with the Flinch modification are unable to swing until they have one or more strikes on the count. This generally results in a higher number of strikeouts, as well as base on balls. Notably this can be subverted by the 0 modification, as was seen on the Baltimore Crabs after the Season β15 Election. It is possible that the effect of Flinch is a play-on-words with the Shelled One's threats that I WILL TEACH YOU DISCIPLINE, as by preventing swings until there is a strike on the count the players with Flinch display a high level of Plate Discipline.

Mild has no affect on players in a lineup position.

A Curse?

While in most cases throughout the Expansion and Discipline Eras Flinch was a significant hinderance to players, in it's initial debut it had an interesting effect on the Charleston Shoe Thieves. The Shoe Thieves season record actually improved by two wins after being cursed.

This was a result of the pitching environment allowing players who were forced to not swing to garner significantly more walks. This could be seen by comparing the leaderboards for the most Bases on Balls between seasons. In Season 9 the un-cursed Shoe Thieves appeared once in the top ten, with the highest number of walks from their players being 38 from Hotbox Sato tying for sixth place overall. In Season 10 the cursed Shoe Thieves appeared seven times, with Richardson Games leading the league with 72 walks.

To look at another metric; The Shoe Thieves moved from 237 walks and 891 hits in Season 9 to 457 walks and 710 hits in Season 10. Notably in both seasons the Shoe Thieves finished in the top of their division and made it to the ILB Championships.

The only times the Flinch modification was granted in the Expansion Era was as a result of the Reform will with:

Interactions

Players with Flinch who are also under the effect of 0 will swing at the first pitched strike, overriding flinch.

Mild

Effect

Pitchers with the Mild modification has a chance of throwing a "mild pitch". This causes all the runners to advance, and is treated as a ball on the count.

Mild has no affect on players in a lineup position.
