Velasquez Meadows was a lineup player for the Hellmouth Sunbeams, and was with the team from Season β1 until being incinerated on Season β3, Day 23.

Official League Records

Meadows joined the ILB as a lineup player for the Moab Sunbeams with the Return of Blaseball.

On Season β3, Day 23, Meadows was incinerated and replaced by Alexander Horne. Earlier in the same game, Breckenridge Jazz Hands pitcher Ogden Mendoza had already been incinerated, making this the first game with a double incineration.

Personal Life

Velasquez "Asphodel" Meadows was born and raised in Moab, Utah. Meadows experienced a strong spiritual sensitivity and affiliation with the Moon from a young age, and reported frequent accidental forays to the edges of the underworld in eir youth. Ey were trained for the role of a psychopomp by Nagomi Sr., notable wolf wrestler and "grandmother" to fellow Sunbeams batter Nagomi Nava. Meadows' duties to guide the dead to the afterlife were mostly ceremonial until the end of Season β1, when the Hellmouth opened and disrupted the passage of souls.

Meadows has speculated that his Adaptation was "the ghost stuff, but, backwards, somehow", lending further credence to the theory of retrocausal Adaptation.

Meadows was a well-known and well-respected senior member of the Hellmouth community, most often spotted about town with Sandoval Crossing and Rhys Trombone. Meadows has described the incineration of the latter as "deeply upsetting", as the Blaseball gods' ultimate jurisdiction over the souls of players (and their enshrinement in the Hall of Flame) was not common knowledge at the time. Meadows' soul-shepherding abilities are thus restricted to non-blaseball players, or "the ordinary folk."

During a Season β2 game, Meadows was struck by a bolt of blinding fire. Hir skin was then gleaming bronze, etched with runes and sigils that spell in a panoply of tongues: "BEWARE". Other sources have said Meadows was an adult Giant Duneworm, however these accusations have so far gone unfounded.

Meadows was incinerated on Season β3, Day 23, twenty-one days after the incineration of Rhys Trombone. Most of vis final days were spent with Crossing, as well as a good amount of time spent with Dudley Mueller, Trombone's replacement. Mueller has yet to comment on the discussions the two had, but it appears to hold Meadows in high esteem - and its quiet, strong, purposeful personality reminds several Sunbeams players of Meadows themselves.

Legacy

Nagomi Nava, under Sandoval Crossing's initial tutelage, took on the bulk of Meadows duties as Hellmouth's resident psychopomp. While most ghosts of Hellmouth now know to seek out Nagomi Nava when the time comes for them to cross, the souls of older former members of the community will often linger around Meadows' childhood neighborhood instead.

Meadows' ghost is able to maintain a presence on the Immaterial Plane, stymieing permanent attempts to imprison em in the Hall or pull eir soul into the Hellmouth. Ey credit this to eir existing ability to traverse afterlives, along with the timely vengeance of Alexander Horne hitting a Grand Slam Horne Run at his first at-bat following his replacement of the incinerated Meadows. While Meadows can possess his remnant ashes scattered in the Solarium, ze has an easier time communicating as a phantom. Eir spectral form can only manifest under pure moonlight, and ey are banished back to the Hall when exposed to sunlight or artificial light.

Meadows' phantasmal appearance is mostly identical to his appearance in life prior to the return of Blaseball, including hir hair which has always floated "with an eerie sereneness, like ve is underwater, or being tugged by the tide."

Meadows manifests where ey can, including at late-night moonlit batting practices of former Sunbeams such as Alaynabella Hollywood and Malik Romayne, as well as eir god-daughter, Esme Ramsey of the Charleston Shoe Thieves. Ey offer moral support, batting tips, fatherly advice, and ancient hexes. Meadows's Ghost also serves as the Sunbeams' team manager.
