The Shadow Moabbey is an organisation in Hellmouth, Utah. It is home to the Order of Lanternbearers. The Moabbey is located in the La Sals mountains, overlooking the desert and what is now the Hellmouth. Since the return of blaseball, the Moabbey has worked in close collaboration with the Hellmouth Sunbeams.

Connection to the Sunbeams

Following the opening of the Forbidden Book and subsequent changes to the inhospitality of the Sunbeams' home ground, management needed a way to adequately prepare Utah rookies for life in Hellmouth[1]. The Sunbeams turned to the Shadow Moabbey, one of the few buildings that still stood after the Hellmouth consumed the desert. There, the monks of the Order of Lanternbearers would harness the power of the Hellmouth and the Sunbeams to grow the ingredients needed for their infamous smoothies, as well as their more palatable beer. As a side effect, potential players become better equipped to deal with the dangers of playing at The Solarium, in a controlled, safer environment.

Smoothies are primarily grown on the Smoothie Tree, known as Smoothyggdrasil, the oldest and longest serving monk. They are a friendly sort, and make it Their duty to care for the younger, less experienced monks. Through various tests in the past, Smoothyggdrasil has worked out that the products of Their branches are affected by what They eat, what They drink, and what They choose to do.

The team frequently makes the long trek up the Mill Creek hiking lane to the Moabbey after home games. After especially tiresome games and away games, the Shadow Moabbey somehow delivers smoothies to the team. The method of delivery is unknown, but the players always receive the flavor they most want at the time.

Paths

Initiation within the Order of Lanternbearers comes through three paths: The Path of the Retired, the Path of the Aspirant, and the Path of the Pilgrim.

Path of the Retired

Monks who take on the mantle of the Retired are those who once played for the Sunbeams. They have since stepped back into the Shadows, giving a chance for newer players to take their place. Sometimes, those who are Retired choose to play for the team again, but most are content to remain within the Shadow Moabbey drinking, gardening, and cheering on their former team.

Known members of the Retired Path

  • Joe Voorhees (unconfirmed, rumored to be particularly skilled at trimming vegetation with knives and shears)

Path of the Aspirant

Those who take on the mantle of the Aspirant have arrived at the Moabbey for the purpose of training to become a player for the Sunbeams. Aspirants' names are often spelt out by Diviners of SIBR. An Aspirant's first few years are spent entirely on training in their chosen path - be it batting or pitching. On completion of their training, they will continue to practice, but split their time between tending the gardens and assisting Smoothyggdrasil in Their tasks.

Known members of the Aspirant Path

There are no known members of the Aspirant Path, as such information is kept secret by the order. Any who discover the name of an Aspirant are forced to join the Order also, to protect the aspirants from being overwhelmed by excited fans.

Path of the Pilgrim

The final path, the mantle of the Pilgrim, is both the most eclectic and most devoted to the Order. Many citizens from across the known and unknown worlds are known to make the pilgrimage to the Moabbey, and some are hit with what is known by some as ‘the spark’, and by others as ‘impulsive foolishness’. They feel inexplicably drawn to remain at the Moabbey and take on the robes. They will never choose to become a player for the Sunbeams, but are the most commonly seen members of the Order. Their friendship with those who come and go, be they players or pilgrims, is inspirational to many who follow one of the Sunbeams branches.

Known members of the Pilgrim Path

  • Beef Randolph, official nutritionist for the Sunbeams
  • Smoothyggdrasil, abbot of the Moabbey and purveyor of "delicious" "smoothies"

  1. Initial efforts to bring in "training camps" were by-and-large stymied by the Hellmouth Anti-Tourism Board.
