History

Zavala began their Blaseball career as the shadow of PolkaDot Patterson, who was playing for the Breath Mints at the time. When Patterson was transferred to the Baltimore Crabs at the end of Season One, a loophole in the contract meant that Zavala could not be transferred with them. As such, Zavala was forced to inhabit the shed skin of Patterson in order to continue playing for the Breath Mints.

Whether any link between Zavala and Patterson remains is unclear, although the pair have an unnerving tendency to blink at precisely the same time.

For several seasons, Zavala was the Breath Mints' objectively worst player, pitching many losses and cementing the weak portion of the team's rotation. They were a shy member of the team, sometimes cutting loose with team favorites such as Boyfriend Monreal (who always made sure pay them compliments) during Party Time, but otherwise being rather reserved. They seemed to carry a weight with them, and often seemed uncomfortable in the skin that they inhabited.

After Season 4, Zavala received a 13% pitching buff, along with the rest of the rotation, as a result of them all mysteriously switching dominant hands. When asked about this, Zavala commented that "It's strange—somehow I feel like this was always how it was. I just... never realized." As the off season continued, Zavala began to grow pieces of of a body of their own, bones at first, and then skin, and then muscles and organs. Teammates and fans reported a noticeable increase not only in their performance, but in their general happiness, in the amount of times they'd let out a laugh with the team, in the smiles they let gleam after throwing a strike. Zavala is now almost complete with their metamorphosis, and will likely soon be retiring Patterson's old skin for good. Nobody on the team or in the stands has anything to say about this other that "we're so proud."

Zavala prefers two songs for their walk-up music: "Crawling in my Skin" or "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini"
