Before the Spies

Deliberately or not, Plums Blather is vague about what their life was like before joining the Spies. Their claims are varied and always a quote from an existing piece of literature. These quotes tend to reference academic themes. They may have been a librarian, an ex-professor, or an archivist which the Agency happened to find. While Blather has been the backbone of the Spies’ archival system for ▮▮▮▮▮▮▮ and ▮▮ seconds, their career as a pitcher is relatively new.

As Blather had previously shown very little interest in field work and missions that required them to spend extended periods of time outside of the Spies’ archives, they were initially a distant yet supportive figure. The addition of Aoife Mahle to the Spies’ active roster helped encourage them to connect with their teammates, but they still prefer the company of books in the archives.

Career with the Houston Spies

As a studious figure, Blather is the first point of contact for many players trying to navigate all manners of unsorted files. They hint at not wanting to take up space, and have been frequently switched to and from the Spies’ active roster and the Shadows (whatever role is most convenient). Members of the Spies have started to notice them more and more often while out of play; more lost agents are directed to Blather for information, and more cryptic yet informative notes signed by the librarian have been left around REDACTED.

Their closest group of friends within the Agency consists of Aoife Mahle and Chet Takahashi, all of whom joined the roster in quick succession. When asked about these connections and how the Spies’ office equipment impacted their different styles of play, Blather’s response was that it “would be useful to read up on how humanities and arts are useful for investigations”.

What is Plums Blather?

An agender librarian and archivist. They tend to make sure people are at least comfortable if they fall asleep in the library. Agents shouldn’t be alarmed if something seems off, if they can’t see through Blather’s glasses, or why Blather happens to know what they know. It’s a matter of privacy.

Blather is also an enjoyer of any and all literature; they don’t discern between what they read and quote. This is not hyperbole.

If an agent is in need of a dossier, they are to ask Blather first. If an agent is in need of a book recommendation or piece of detailed trivia, Blather is even happier to share what they have. There may be points in time where an agent is given a fact or piece of information that isn’t needed or even being requested, but every time Blather shares a seemingly irrelevant file, the intel is always what’s needed in the future. This foresight is welcomed by their veteran teammates.

No, but what is Plums?

Their history tends to be up for debate. The answer that most agents accept is that Plums Blather is either human or human shaped, just with an encyclopedic knowledge of the contents of the Spies’ archives and library. A lack of files on their past before they were a librarian and an archivist has resulted in odd speculation. Theories range from Blather being a scholar who infiltrated the Agency and found a home amongst the team, to Blather being an AI who taught themselves how to properly sort files. Another is that Blather is the Archive, a figure who maintains and speaks for the intelligence gathered by the Spies.

They would rather look out for their own and discuss the latest books they’ve been reading. Asking what someone is is a very personal question. The actual answers they give are book recommendations relevant to your request. There is never a single word about their own history. You wouldn’t ask your old college professor if they sprung from a collection of books, would you?
