Box of Hiroto Cerna Files

Dust billows as the file box lands on the table. While many archives in the Interdimensional Rumor Mill are unified in some way, this... definitely isn’t one of them. The accompanying Rumor Registry explains all of the contents... wherever it is... but for now you grab the folder labelled IF-33.126 and start reading...

Background

Hiroto Cerna is a Boston native. He grew up in Boston’s Chinatown, close to the Boston Gardens. Cerna has said before that some of his earliest childhood memories are in The Garden back when its sentience was nascent and it was “more of a park and a lowercase-G garden.”

Cerna’s childhood love for green space developed into an adult career in parks and recreation management. He stayed in Boston as he earned his associate’s degree and got a job with the Boston parks department. Cerna has held a number of positions within the department, including event planner, volunteer coordinator, administrative assistant, associate director, and groundskeeper.

Cerna is also an outspoken proponent for environmental justice, including clean air and water and general environmental stewardship. His advocacy caught the attention of Isaac Rubberman, who moved to Boston and befriended Cerna. Rubberman, in turn, was the first to notice the Boston Flowers moving into the Boston Garden and claiming it as their field.

Even before he was on the team, Cerna spent plenty of time around the Flowers. His childhood past meant that he had a unique bond with the Garden, who appeared to recognize him. As the Garden grew and gained sentience, it became clear that Cerna was one of its favorites, and it wanted to keep him safe and happy.

Time on the Flowers

In Season β6, Caligula Lotus was incinerated by a rogue umpire. Cerna, who had watched several of his friends (including Rubberman) fall victim to incinerations, decided that enough was enough, and took Lotus’s place. Cerna has refused to say whether this idea originated with him or with the Garden, and moreover has refused to say if the Garden approves of his involvement with the team. One reporter attempted to ask the Garden and was answered only by the overwhelming scent of a cypress shrub.

Cerna’s jack-of-all-trades nature came in handy following team captain Beck Whitney’s feedback to the Miami Dale. He helped with the administrative side of the transition, and continued to help new captain Margarito Nava. He also did his best to maintain the Garden, although some fans speculated that his role was usurped by the Groundskeeper out of the Garden’s frustration with him.

Nonetheless, Cerna was definitively a part of the team by the time the Grand Siesta arrived. He spent much of the siesta in Boston, helping the parks department, and some time traveling to help other cities start environmental justice initiatives of their own. Cerna also made a point of taking vacations; he was spotted traveling with Owen Picklestein and Sutton Picklestein, alongside other players at various points. All of them have refused to comment to the media about their travels, except for one comment from Cerna: “Some things are personal.”

When play resumed, Cerna expressed disappointment, as he enjoyed having time to himself . Nonetheless, he continued playing with the Flowers and continued maintaining the Garden. Cerna also took it upon himself to help new additions to the team, of which there were many, get used to the Garden.

Cerna was incinerated by a rogue umpire in an away game against the Ohio Worms. While the Flowers were at The Wormhole at the time, some eyewitnesses report that the Garden began to emit strong scents of fresh-cut grass. When the team returned, they found a section overgrown by marigolds. This section remains today, although it is carefully pruned by all team members.

Relationships

Cerna was good friends with Owen Picklestein; the two could often be found working together in the Garden. While Owen cannot speak English or any known verbal language, Cerna developed ways of communicating with Owen. He also visited Owen frequently after Owen was injured in a consumer attack. Following his death, Owen became the most frequent caretaker of the marigold patch.

Cerna had a semi-friendly rivalry with Moses Mason. The two took opposite approaches to the Garden: while Cerna believed that pruning and trimming were beneficial, Mason preferred wild growth. The two of them clashed over this philosophical difference frequently. Following Mason’s incineration, Cerna said in an interview, “Of course I’ll miss them. I’ll let things grow wild for them. I think the answer is we were both right, in our own ways.”

Trivia

  • Cerna has an extensive collection of leather jackets.
    • Reporters and fans have been advised not to ask if they’re vegan leather, lest they be subject to one of Cerna’s infamous impromptu Tled talks about the dangers of vegan leather and microplastics. They’re real leather.
  • Cerna also has a moped. Its name is Sandy.
  • He also likes to gel his hair back.
  • Cerna has described his dream aesthetic as “queering the greaser. Like, all the greasers in movies are built white guys. I’m Japanese, I’m gay, I’m trans, I’m fat, I’m a little bit fem. I’m those guys’ worst nightmare. It’s awesome.”
  • In his lifetime Cerna was either directly or indirectly responsible for the foundation of 84 environmental justice initiatives.
