AVAST!
The waters beyond this point are uncharted, tales from distant shores echoed back into our reality.

Background

The following accounts can be traced to a single leather-bound journal originally found in a locked wooden chest alongside a sextant-like device of indeterminate origin and a shell that matches no known species of mollusc. The chest was located in a storage room in the Legscraper’s lower levels that was described as “smelling faintly of the sea”. Subsequent attempts to locate and navigate to said room have been unsuccessful thus far. The journal details the exploits of the crew of a large sailing vessel, The Tokyo Adrift, descriptions of which are largely consistent with mid-17th century galleons.

With The Tokyo Adrift

Goodwin Morin was enlisted to the crew of The Tokyo Adrift from another crew known as the Sea Ragers. Later quotes reveal that she was an experienced hand on the seas, having previously served in "the notoriously stoic and silent crew of the Sapphire Arrow". The overstaffed ship was known to work "in terrible silence, their synergy allowing for coordination without the need for shanties or work songs". Morin escaped the Sapphire Arrow and, after several days adrift at sea, came upon the Sea Ragers, drawn to their ship by "distant echoes of music".

Roughly around the time Captain Strongbody decided to focus the ship’s efforts on mussel cultivation, he recognised the need to employ someone with relevant skills and abilities to assist in this new venture. Morin was an obvious pick, her build and stature dwarfing even the captain himself. Her reputation preceded her and she lived up to the tales told of “her remarkable speed and grace in the water”. As described in the journal, “watching her work was like poetry in motion, first diving through the sea as if it were barely there only to expertly redirect her momentum to sweep up her quarry and return to the surface in one smooth uninterrupted motion”.

Morin’s hair is described as having the appearance of “cascading currents, fading from cerulean to seafoam”. Like the Immateria the ship sails on, her hair does not seem to cause objects to get wet. If the need to defend herself arose, Morin was described as arming herself with an imposing trident that “sailed through the water smoothly as she did”. By the accounts of the journal, Morin got along well with the crew of the Adrift, especially its water-dwelling members who often expressed admiration for her aptitude at diving. During her shore leave, Morin was known to frequent hot springs which she would invite the crew to, however the journal describes the conditions as "temperatures barely below boiling, liable to rend skin from bone."

Morin’s fate is ultimately unknown as the final page of the journal is water damaged, causing the ink to run and rendering it unreadable. The last available entry, dated to 1667, describes her wrestling the [REDACTED] with her bare arms however she [REDACTED] resulting in [REDACTED]

Before Blaseball

Goodwin Morin grew up in Quil Ceda Village as a member of the Snoqualmie tribe. A quiet and studious child, she fell in love with math at a young age. As she grew older, this transformed into a fascination with accounting, which she found more practical than pure math. She went to community college, then undergraduate, and eventually got an MBA in accounting and finance, all while staying in the greater Seattle area. She got a job as an associate at a tax firm, which she kept until she was well into her 30s.

Life in the Shadows

Despite her passion, Morin was drained by the long hours and high expectations. When a coworker mentioned the Seattle Garages and the return of blaseball, she looked into joining the team as a pipe dream and discovered the shadows. She signed up to join the shadows, hoping she could make some extra cash and step down to a part-time accounting job, all without having to actually play blaseball.

Immediately, a wrench was thrown into her plans: a teenaged Eleanor “Lenny” Marijuana. Cast adrift by the shadows, Marijuana needed a place to stay, and Morin had an extra bedroom. Morin was hesitant, having long since decided that she had no interest in parenting or caretaking, but allowed Marijuana to move in anyways. The rebellious Marijuana helped Morin cut loose, and Morin became something like an aunt to Marijuana and taught her about responsibility; the two lived together until Marijuana left the shadows.

The introverted Morin found herself flourishing. She easily made friends with new arrivals to the shadows, helping them fit in with the team and navigate the difficulties of doing taxes when you legally only semi-exist. She also continued her job as an accountant, and found that the lower-stakes part-time work was more fulfilling for her.

In the Season 9 elections, Morin was surprised to receive the Secret Weapon blessing, which enhanced her athletic abilities. This enhancement manifested as semi-tangible shadow hands that she could control at will. Morin was disconcerted by the change and preferred not to use the extra hands.

Seattle Garages & Grand Siesta

Morin was promoted to the Garages’ active rotation in Season 11. She was overwhelmed by the attention, but the more media-seasoned Garages helped her adjust. Morin later became co-captain of Milk Proxy Society for the inaugural Coffee Cup. With help from Malik Destiny and Greer Gwiffin, who were her teammates on both the Garages and the Society, Morin was able to connect with blaseball for the first time as a source of joy. Even though her team was eliminated, she became close friends with Destiny and Gwiffin and began to have fun learning about the splort.

Morin spent the Grand Siesta connecting with her Garages teammates, learning about both blaseball and the band. She met Lars Taylor, who gave her advice about using her shadow arms. Inspired by her tenure as co-captain and her newfound expertise, Morin decided to start teaching. She ran an annual series of workshops on financial literacy, with special workshops for blaseball players and tribal members.

However, the return of blaseball brought Morin new stress, which was worsened when she was moved to the lineup. The increased scrutiny of the position began to take its toll on her, especially when combined with the weight of receiving Ego. After spending her entire life in Washington, she found herself ready for a change.

Tokyo Lift

In the Season 13 elections, Morin was transferred to the Tokyo Lift. She was initially concerned about the linguistic barrier and culture shock, not to mention fitting in with the team. To her relief, she quickly became friends with team captain Stijn Strongbody. The two of them made a deal: Morin would help run team practice, and noted mathematician Strongbody would teach Morin about pure math. She also moved in with Tokyo native Silvaire Semiquaver, who helped teach her Japanese and showed her around the city.

Charleston Shoe Thieves & Vaulting

Morin was transferred to the Charleston Shoe Thieves in the Season 16 elections. She was nervous about the growing weight of her ego, particularly after other players began to be vaulted. Morin hoped that the Shoe Thieves would be able to help her figure out how to avoid the same fate, or at the very least go down kicking. She befriended Donna Milicic shortly after ze joined the team. Milicic, already an accomplished shoe thief, helped show Morin the ropes and acclimate her to The Choux. Morin specialized in stealing combat boots.

Goodwin Morin achieved Legendary status on Season 18, Day 99. She left behind most of her worldly possessions, most of which were left to Marijuana, Semiquaver, and Milicic. The only things none of them could find were her favorite pen and notebook.

Trivia

  • Morin enjoys watching competitive reality TV.
  • As an indigenous person, Morin is a proud activist for indigenous rights and land back movements. After she left the Garages, her teammates continued advocating for tribal people in her honor.
  • In every home and apartment Morin has lived in, the first piece of decor she puts up is a bi pride flag in her bedroom.
    • The second is her most recent sobriety chip, which she typically hangs on a lanyard over her lampshade.
      • The third is a framed and signed photo of Mlark Cluban.
  • Morin ran cross-country in high school, and spent large portions of the Grand Siesta competing in charity walkathons and marathons.
  • Morin hates skinny jeans. Like, it’s not bad enough that denim kind of sucks to wear? We’re going to make jeans as uncomfortable as possible? We’re going to make them so tight that you have to put the socks on before the jeans? Ridiculous. She’ll take straight fit jeans any day, thank you very much.

An Unexpected Recruit

Goodwin Morin stands at an impressive 7'3. She claims to be from a close knit guild of god slayers from Dark Seattle. While she was initially secretive about the organization, she has since opened up more about them during her time on this side of the gumwall. Formerly known as the God Ragers, this guild was made up of people from all walks of life who decided at one point or another to dedicate their lives to taking down gods, primarily the kind that cropped up due to humanity's hubris. She reports the guild being responsible for taking down the gods of logging and internet trolling, among others. The God Ragers would meet their demise when they agreed to help take down the Sun, as its ever present fixture was proving detrimental to the local ecology. Details of the acquisition are scarce, but after Morin pierced the sun with an arrow, the Corporation took control of the God Ragers, Morin included.

During Season 9, as a result of the Secret Weapon Scandal, Morin was blessed with shadow magic and an incredible buff to her strength. Again, Morin wasn't given much choice, but took to her new powers well. As she practiced honing her newfound strength, she began plotting an uprising with her fellow team mates, who were all kept in "company cubicles" beneath the Dedication to Equality Ballpark Tower (DEBT). As the plot was about to get underway, the power was cut by none other than the Seattle Garages, and the two groups worked together for what came to be known as Operation DEBT Collection. As they reached the surface, it became apparent that Morin would not fit on the tour bus without sacrificing a number of seats given her massive size, so Morin opted to let other escapees go in her stead. Ollie Mueller handed her two skateboards shortly before boarding the bus. After helping them push start the bus to allow for their escape, she strapped both skateboards to her feet and roller skateboarded to safety after them. While she lost sight of them shortly thereafter, she managed to find her way through the gate to Seattle, smashing through the remainders of the gum wall.

Morin reports meaning to meet up with the Garages after her arrival, but getting caught up in the less dystopian Seattle. During her time in Dark Seattle, she took to going to underground pinball arcades (which were referred to as "hot tub clubs", to avoid detection), so upon discovering pinball was legal and encouraged, she toured the various pinball arcades in the area, bumping former Garages member Allison Abbott from many of the top scoring slots. It was at Rayglun Lounge that Morin met Sparks Beans, who offered to let her crash with them. It wasn't until a few days had passed that Morin realized Beans was also a member of the Seattle Garages, as Beans had work the day of the heist and could not attend.

After Mike Townsend's return to baking in the Seattle Shadows Co-op, team captain Teddy Duende offered Morin his spot. Morin accepted and has been on the team since. She's proved indispensable, pitching with a number of her arms. On Season 11, Day 12, Morin was charmed by three different batters of the San Francisco Lovers (Kichiro Guerra, Don Mitchell, and Alexander Horne), granting her the nickname "Bi Disaster" by her fans, a title which she wears proudly. Since then, Morin has had a track record of doing poorly against the Lovers, charmed or not. Rumors suggest Morin has taken to hot tubbing with them before games, but these rumors cannot be substantiated, nor could it be clarified which type of hot tubbing they might be doing.

Personal Life

Pinball remains as Morin's favorite hobby, using it to calm down before and after games. Morin also enjoys a good hot tub soak, especially after working out. As pinball arcades were referred to as "hot tub clubs" in Dark Seattle, Morin enjoys confusing her teammates by telling them she's going hot tubbing and not clarifying which she's referring to. Teammate Malik Destiny learned this the hard way when, having assumed she meant pinball, followed along only to find it involved hot water.

Morin continues to room with Sparks Beans in the International District, the two practicing their magic together. Beans has begun teaching Morin the ways of Tabletop Gaming, and in return Morin shows Beans how to do pushups "the right way." Morin says she appreciates Beans' coffee making abilities, even if they do chide her for using milk substitutes.

During the siesta, Morin has taken up holding yoga classes in which she plays metal music and growls out the pose instructions. This Heavy Metal Yoga is held locally as well as by teleconference, and a number of players in the league partake in her classes.

Music

Morin, determined to master her new shadow arms, chose the to learn the multi necked guitar and the harp. This makes Morin the first member of the team and of the band to pick up the guitar as their primary instrument. As music is forbidden in Dark Seattle, Morin has yet to settle on a favorite genre.

Morin is in a metal band with team member Theodore Duende. With Duende's impressive voice and Morin's ability to project her voice through the shadows, earplugs are mandatory at their concerts.

Time on the Tokyo Lift

In the Season 12 elections, Morin was moved to the Garages' lineup. She spent the following season getting to know as many other players as she could. She was intrigued by the Tokyo Lift: Morin could see their potential for both blaseball and godslaying. In Season 13, she transferred to the Lift to help coach them and hone their skills. The team gave Morin a special uniform without the team's arrow logo.

While on the team, Morin lived with Silvaire Semiquaver. The two became good friends; Semiquaver served as something of a guide for Morin as she learned her way around Tokyo. Morin also developed a close friendship with Stijn Strongbody. They found kindred spirits in one another, both of them feeling pressure to take care of their teams and serve as role models. They were able to talk about their anxiety and find ways of dealing with it together. Strongbody was a frequent attendee at Morin's heavy metal yoga classes, now hosted in the Legscraper.

While Morin expected to get along with Gerund Pantheocide, she actually found that Pantheocide idolized her as a god-killer and had difficulty seeing her as a teammate and a normal person. Despite her new struggles with Ego, Morin was able to remind Pantheocide that no one you look up to is better than you are, and the two of them were able to form a stronger, more well-rounded friendship.

Morin also found herself in a complicated semi-rivalry with the troubled Wyatt Quitter. The two god-touched players were able to recognize something of themselves in one another, but could never quite reconcile that into a friendship. The two were at odds, and took to avoiding one another rather than pursuing arguments. Morin was still stricken when Quitter became a Receiver, then Echo, then Static in short order. With Quitter's loss hanging heavy over them, Morin led the team into the sixth stage of grief: deicide.
