Blood, Beak, and Bone

When Nagomi McDaniel arrived in Baltimore after York’s death she was in search of a specialist. With their resident diabolist Baldwin Breadwinner recently transferred (again), Nagomi was preparing to look elsewhere when she happened upon the Crab’s newest arrival, Enid Marlow. Enid had recently been traded from the Ohio Worms and was known among her peers as a talented witch. Seeing Nagomi’s plight, she offered her services to assist in returning York to the mortal coil.

The details of the pacts Enid made are UNKNOWN. The entities that Enid bargained with are UNKNOWN . The protections that Enid included in this deal are UNKNOWN. Once the bargain was completed, one day she was a part of the Crabs’ Roster, and the next she was a memory to most, lost in the Shadows where she patiently awaits her return to the game. And that same day York Silk returned to play, having never even met the one who took him from the Hall of Flames.

But what has been taken must be someday returned. Enid PAID her price to the shadows, and York will PAY his debts as well. Only time will tell what those costs will be for the rest of the league.

Traversing the Depths

Upon arriving in Baltimore York decided to take the direct approach - ignoring the many warnings of locals, signs posted nearby, and layers of caution tape between himself and the Chesapeake bay to attempt and communicate directly with the Olde One. Had he listened to some he might have learned that the Olde One was a capricious beast, just as likely to tell him off as to appreciate his forwardness. Others might have said that she was not to be disturbed, and needed to be contacted through the proper channels after months of meditation and learning. Some would have warned him that she was dead. Instead he nearly interrupted her weekly confluence with other nearby entities|.

In the solitude of the bay the two discussed many things. York had questions; about what happened to Nagomi all those years ago, about Carcinizatoin, about his newly acquired debt, and about what exactly she was. The Crab Mother responded that

Firstly, that was a personal question and she would not comment.

Secondly, Carcinization is the process by which all things eventually Become Crabs.

Lastly, his debt was not her department.

While disappointed by the answers, York did make a point of asking about his own carcinization, and how that would work to which the Crab Mother only smiled (as much as a long-dead crab god can smile) and told him that despite many misconceptions about the process it was up to him. And that no matter the form it’s always up to the person who chooses it.

York decided he would sleep on it.

Full Circle

On Season 2 day 74 Jessi Wise was incinerated and replaced by York Silk. As she watched him be dragged into the splort, she felt a certain amount of responsibility for him and everything he experienced in the game. She celebrated his record breaking number of home runs in season 4, she cursed the gods on his behalf when he was conscripted to the Shelled one's Pods and she cried with relief when he was able to land safely in Halifax- shaken but recovering.

And then on Season 14, Day 87, When York met the same end that Jessi once had all those years ago she decided this would not stand.

Jessi Wise had been dead a long time, and she had picked up a few tricks. While she never had any interest in returning to play herself, she had watched as Jaylen Hotdogfingers, Tillman Henderson, and Sutton Picklestein all returned from the dead, and were eventually returned to the Hall. She knew that whatever she could offer would be temporary, but she also knew that whatever she could offer him she owed him as her replacement.

In the season 14 election Jessi Wise took control of the narrative, and decided that she was not yet done protecting her charge.

Death means nothing to those who have known it long enough.

Back in the Spotlight

After his return from the grave York took up a position on the Baltimore Crabs and was immediately confronted with their rookie star pitcher Jacoby Podcast. Jacoby was fascinated by York and his history, and looking to get him on an episode. After the initial awkwardness of the exchange, the two of them got along remarkably well, with their shared enthusiasm for the splort and love of occasionally getting into trouble.

As the two most personable and media friendly Crabs, York and Jacoby were quickly deputized to be the Crabs who dealt with any postgame interviews, and all incoming press or questions related to the team. The press learned that despite the duo’s goofy exterior, they were just as fast to crack a joke as they were to cut down any insensitive questions from reporters regarding the Big Leagues, the current state of the players, or York’s own necromancy. In fact, after one such question York asked Nagomi to flip one such reporter’s vehicle upside down and leave it skewered on a lamppost in front of the stadium as a warning (a trick he learned from his mom). Nagomi was happy to assist.

A Mother’s Love

After York’s death, Mrs. Silk did not mourn. Instead she put her time and energy into something more productive. She planned. There are many entities in the immaterial plane who have the power to raise the dead. She knew this, and yet she knew even more so that binding her son to one of these could only end in his downfall. Instead she did what she had to do, and found her own way to tap into the hall, into the entities that surround this place, and into the powers they held. By making use of her intimate knowledge of REDACTED she was able to combine the spirits REDACTED with the underlying concepts of REDACTED in a way that has never been seen before, and will likely not be seen again.

While the details are known only to her, it seems that Mrs. Silk was successful in her quest. York Silk was returned to the immaterial plane, and gods know what the cost might be for the rest of us.

No More Heroes

When York returned to play he was surprised to find Nagomi McDaniel on the roster. While she sought him out immediately York kept his distance. It had been a long time since they played together in Hawai’i and a lot had happened since then. As York put it “I’m not a kid anymore Nagomi”. As difficult as it was, Nagomi recognized the importance of letting York have his space, and while she still watched over him, she did it from afar. While York could accept this, what he really hoped for was the day where they could be a part of this game as equals.

In an attempt to move out and gain some independence, York underwent the storied tradition of apartment hunting. After a month of unsuccessful showings and several Crabs offering him a place to stay, York finally found a room for rent in an unassuming apartment building in downtown Baltimore. After signing his lease he discovered that his neighbors included Bevan Underbuck and Enid Marlow who were rooming together in the off-season as well as the entire Baltimore Crabs pitching rotation, who seemed to be staying with Brock Forbes and Adalberto Tosser. While there was a great deal of embarrassment on everyone’s part, York did quickly learn to appreciate having Finn James occasionally crashing in his bathtub, or opening his hall closet to find Jacoby Podcast had made it into a recording booth. Sometimes growing up means moving out, but it never means going through it alone.

Ego Collides

After York’s death, there was a stirring out in Boston as Nagomi McDaniel made her way to Halifax. From the depth of their shadows she had come to an understanding. An understanding about the way of the world and her place in it. Heedless of the many warnings of her teammates both former and current, she gathered any objects with a strong connection to York, and brought them to Baltimore. When asked later why she chose Baltimore rather than the many teams with a direct tie to the Hall of Flames who had a proven record of necromancy, she simply responded that, “No one in Baltimore would be willing to stop me.”

Nagomi McDaniel, a titan of Blaseball denied ascension, and denied a rest, took the power that had been foisted upon her, and used it to force the immaterial plane to bend to her will. Nagomi McDaniel made a deal, and she will pay a price. It is still not understood exactly what this deal entailed, but with York and Nagomi once again playing for the same team after decades apart, it will be seen what the cost of this transaction was.

From the Deep

After York’s death, Nagomi McDaniel returned to Baltimore briefly in the postseason. Ostensibly this was to cheer on her former teammates in the Wild Card round, however it was clear that this tragedy had caused her to reach out to her old friends in the bay as she mourned the loss of York.

And in a moment of weakness she wished it did not have to be like this. She raged against the gods, and against the umps, and against York's fate, and she raged into the cold unforgiving waters of the Chesapeake Bay.

What Nagomi could not have known is that The Olde One was there and listening. As she always was. The Mother Crab whose ghost still hides under the bay, and who answers the calls of her people in need.

The Mother Crab, whose mandate is change, entropy, and remaking, heard Nagomi’s call as a prayer.

The Mother Crab answered.

As the final games ended she made her move, and from the waters of the bay York reemerged. Reports differ on exactly who was there to overhear it, but as he walked out of the bay he spoke five words to whoever was listening.

“I'm not afraid of you”

Hard Shells, Soft Hearts

When York returned from the dead he was unsure of exactly what that would entail. While he had seen the devastation raised by Jaylen Hotdogfingers in the wake of her revival, it was unclear exactly what it would mean for him, and if this changed who York was, or who he was supposed to be. In this moment of doubt he sought out Nagomi McDaniel for advice, and the two of them were quietly relieved that after all this time, they were finally in the right place at the right time to help each other. As difficult as it was to talk about these things, there was at least one person on the roster who had been through just as much as he had who he could trust implicitly.

Much to York’s surprise he also found solace in the stoic Crab’s pitcher Brock Forbes. While York’s initial impressions of Brock were of the stone man’s stern expressions, York quickly discovered his softer side as Brock worked to help York find a place on the team, and to create a healthy outlet for some of the feelings he had bottled up over the years of play. York wasn’t the first person on the team to come back from something like this, and Brock was determined to make sure he wouldn't have to do it alone.

To Spit in the Face of the Gods

York is not the first player to return from the dead. And he will likely not be the last. While some were content with the results of the first instance of necromancy on the league, others were not so easily satisfied. When Nagomi McDaniel approached York’s old teammate Mooney Doctor about the possibility of repeating the experiment that brought back Jaylen Hotdogfingers, Mooney thought of her own loss, and what she was willing to do to spite the gods that caused it. She reportedly told Nagomi that:

“I have no interest in repeating the experiment. What good is a hypothesis that never moves past it’s first stage? We know now what happens when someone is brought back from the void.

This time I will do it better."

And so using the secrets unveiled by the Leviathan and the Necronomicon many years ago she once again drew from the void and was able to return York to the immaterial plane. This time however it would be different, or so Mooney claimed.

Home Away From Home

Upon returning to play in Baltimore, York was saddened to learn that his gunbat, the Vibe Check had been lost upon his incineration. He was reportedly told by teammate Silvaire Roadhouse that “It’s not the tool that makes the player, they’re your skills and your experiences that made it valuable, so even if you have to replace the bat, you’ll still carry it inside of you” to which York responded that “Yeah, but it was cool”. Silvaire quickly agreed, and offered him one of her revolvers as a replacement but York politely declined.

This interaction did however spark a quick friendship between York and Silvaire, who realized that Silvaire, despite her cool exterior, was actually a huge dork. York was eager to learn Silvaire’s gunslinging ways, and how they could be applied to batting, and Silvaire was happy to enjoy some time getting to know their newest recruit. She and Silvaire Sr. were even more than happy to give York a place to stay in their farmhouse outside of Baltimore where he was given ample amounts of work to keep him busy and the Roadhouses were sufficiently threatening to the press that they kept a wide berth from the property.

Play ball

After York’s death there was an outcry from fans, entities, and Gods alike. The super idol? Struck down in his prime? It was unthinkable that his story could end there. So even as the Moist Talkers moved onto the finals to take their first championship in York’s name, the Fans of baseball were not content to let him lie in rest.

In the season 14 election, to the surprise of most of the league, York Silk was plundered from the Hall of Flames and landed on the Baltimore Crabs. The team took this change surprisingly well, with Parker Parra offering their place on the roster so Nagomi McDaniel could join the team from Boston and reunite with York as he made a fairly significant adjustment back to the world of the living and back to being at the mercy of the fans.

Welcome Back

During his brief time in the trench, York received what has become a standard onboarding package from an excitable and professional marine biology enthusiast named Nora Perez. She had been playing this role for years it seemed and was happy to help York acclimate to what they both surprised to discovered was a short visit. Nora’s friendly nonchalance and facts about marine life were a welcome reprieve for York after his sudden death, and he made fast friends with who he later realized was the Crabs’ first incinerated player.

Upon his return to life York landed in Baltimore and took up his place on the team, thankful that he at least had a siesta to acclimatize. During practice one day he picked at the layers of tape and labels on a spare locker, and started picking apart the label to reveal the layers underneath. Evelton McBlase II, Nagomi McDaniel, Holden Stanton, Nagomi McDaniel (again), Holden Stanton (again), and finally at the very bottom, Nora Perez.

He asked around and made the connection. The woman who had died years before, being a mediocre player, and remembered not as a hero or an inspiration, but rather as a person who died, but was ultimately left to rest. He found he rather envied that idea. He ended up moving into her old locker, and finding her old thesis notes that had slipped behind the back of the metal wall. During the brief siesta between season 14 and 15 York got some help from his new teammates to get involved in the local marine biology scene, including enrolling in some night classes at the local community college. It felt good to be planning for what a life might look like outside of the splort.
