History

COMMUNITY REPORTS
The remainder of this article contains lore created collaboratively by the Blaseball community.

Origins

Not much is known about when and how Mohammed Picklestein joined the ILB, but records indicate they have been there since the beginning. They are often mistaken for a “mad scientist”, due to their giant laboratory and gadgets. But in fact, Picklestein is a pioneer of lab safety, and their lab is always up to code. Not many Agents have seen Picklestein’s laboratory up close, but those who have can tell you that the Tesla coils are within fine shielding mesh, the precarious-looking catwalks have Plexiglass railings, and the weird fuming chemicals are just colored water with chunks of dry ice inside.

When the Houston Spies were formed, Mohammed Picklestein allegedly managed to break through the UNIDENTIFIED LOCATION's security with nothing but a jar of pickles on their person. This event is what also earned them the nickname that many people use to refer to them, “Mo’ Pickles”.

The Agency promptly hired Picklestein to not only upgrade their security system, but to become the team’s main gadgeteer. Picklestein agreed, and began by writing extensive safety regulations.

Picklestein’s exact age is unknown, but they claim to have been present at the forging of the first Sun, which they refer to darkly as “the first OSHA violation.” Their inventions are a legacy whose presence is still felt across the Internet League. To name just one example, Picklestein consulted on the creation of the Iffey Jr., a breakthrough in player safety.

It is said that idea of "stealing" bases was developed by Picklestein back in the early days of the ILB. Once rumor inevitably got out about the supposed "Picklestein Technique," which worked its way into the Blaseball lexicon as "The Picklestein," "The Pickle," and eventually just "stealing." This legacy lives on despite Picklestein entering the shadows, as hungry fans can purchase Pickles, which grant them Coins when their Idol steals bases.

Exit from the Shadows

Picklestein originally came up with the plans for the Fax Machine renovation, only for the blueprints to disappear and, a few seasons later, reappear as a stadium renovation.

The Spies came into possession of a Fax Machine in Season 17. After sitting unused for several months, it finally activated on Season 18 Day 11, when Emmett Tabby allowed 10 runs in a game. Picklestein came out of the shadows for the first time in ILB history, and took to the mound.

Once exiting the Shadows, Picklestein started renovating their laboratory with newly acquired resources they didn’t have in the Shadows. They also started allowing the rest of the Spies to visit their laboratory, and to let them see their future projects for gadgets they were making to help the team.

Relationships

Jomgy Rolsenthal

When Picklestein learned that they were going to enter the Shadows, they made a quick prototype of the Fax Machine in order to still be able to communicate with the Spies while they were working on top secret projects mandated by The Agency. From their place in the shadows, they served as a mentor to Jomgy Rolsenthal, whose fascination with gadgeteering was previously hampered by lack of background information. Picklestein faxed the instructions and blueprints to their gadget designs to Rolsenthal; but due to the Shadow Fax technology only being in its infancy, Rolsenthal’s terrible luck meant that the plans often arrived with missing pages or crucial details obscured by excessive toner.

Denzel Scott

Once Picklestein learned about the new Items being introduced in the league, they went to work making Items for the Spies. On Season 19 Day 50, they finished their first item: a Fireproof Ring, having made it using their past knowledge from making the Iffey Jr. They gave it to Denzel Scott. However, it seems that the two only realized the implications of Picklestein's gesture when a journalist asked about Scott's "fiancé".

The official story is that Picklestein merely accidentally kneeled to grab something before handing the item to Scott.

Scott and Picklestein have been extremely close since then, with Scott helping Picklestein out on their projects.
