Malik Romayne is a lineup player for the Houston Spies. Romayne joined the team as the result of a feedback swap with Joe Voorhees on Season 7, Day 60.

Official League Records

Romayne joined the league in Season 1 as a hitter for the Hellmouth Sunbeams.

On Season 7, Day 63, Romayne siphoned some of Boston Flowers batter Nic Winkler's baserunning ability in a game with Blooddrain weather, bringing it from  to .

COMMUNITY REPORTS
The remainder of this article contains lore created collaboratively by the Blaseball community.

Pre-Blaseball career

Before the Hellmouth opened up under Moab, Romayne ran Romayne's Romaine, a quaint restaurant that with many loyal diners. After all, xe were (and are) an excellent chef! The opening of the Hellmouth, however, precipitated a major shift in the culinary habits of the locals.[1] Along with all of xyr ingredients beginning to degrade at a rapid pace, xe knew it was time for a change of profession.

Now, Romayne seeks inspiration in Blaseball. Xe have tried bringing a variety of large cooking implements to use as stand-ins for bats at Blaseball games, but these attempts often proved detrimental to performance (notably, Rhys Trombone claimed that Romayne was stealing their signature style when doing so).

Career with the Sunbeams

During Season 2, on day 47, Malik Romayne and xyr teammate Igneus Delacruz were married during a game. During the Season 4 Elections, Delacruz and Eugenia Bickle were swapped with versions of themselves from another universe due to the passing of the Alternate Reality decree. "Iggy" and Romayne tried to make the relationship work, though each struggled to reconcile the new arrangement with the strength of their love for their respective original husbands.

Following Delacruz's alternate universe swap, Romayne became increasingly interested in the Houston Spies. The Spies have been long rumored to boast abundant intelligence-gathering resources, and an interest in arcane and other less-than-reasonable, dubiously-tasteful, and scarcely-legal studies. On day 60 of Season 7, Romayne met with then-Spies batter Joe Voorhees on the field and convinced him to swap places, as Voorhees himself had an interest in exploring the Hellmouth.

Delacruz and Romayne are said to have ended their romantic relationship on amicable terms, at an unspecified time prior to Romayne's transfer to the Spies.

Career with the Spies

Since transferring to the Spies, Romayne has invested considerable amounts of time into researching alternates, with the ultimate goal of bringing the old Delacruz back—failing that, xe simply wants to understand how and why these changes occurred. In keeping with the Spies' notorious desire for secrecy, the results of Romayne's research are yet unknown.

Adaptation

Both the Spies and the Sunbeams deny that Malik Romayne is anything other than a "normal person". However, they carefully avoid using the word "human".

To the naked eye, Romayne is still entirely humanoid. However, as with anyone else who has lived within the vicinity of the Hellmouth for long enough, Romayne exhibits several peculiar inhuman traits. Xe has a supernaturally good sense of smell and taste, color vision that extends beyond the visible spectrum, a photographic memory, and an unerring directional sense. Notable uses of xyr abilities include:

  • being able to tell whether eggs were spoiled simply by tapping their shells
  • remembering, and accurately following, a recipe that had only been shown on a screen for a fraction of a second
  • navigating a corn maze blindfolded
  • using the Spies' endless supply of shredded documents and a pot of paste to construct a paper model of a building after taking a brief tour inside
  • reading messages that were written using ink only visible to ultraviolet light

It is theorized that Romayne's Adaptation has something to do with pollinators, most likely wasps, as xe has been recorded stating that "yellowjackets make the rest of us look bad."

Denzel Scott was once seen making a peculiar wriggling motion with their hands in front of Romayne. Romayne's response was to squint, and then finally say "I don't speak bumble." The wriggling motions were later found to match the dances used by bees to communicate with each other.

Trivia

  • Romayne is well-known for making quippy remarks and one-liners, like "I'm serving up a hot dish of justice!" or "You gotta tenderize the ball to hit a home run!" This makes the player either a fan favorite or a groan-inducing necessity, depending on who you ask.
