Box of Shirai McElroy Files

Dust billows as the file box lands on the table. While many archives in the Interdimensional Rumor Mill are unified in some way, this... definitely isn’t one of them. The accompanying Rumor Registry explains all of the contents... wherever it is... but for now you grab the folder labelled IF-11.111 and start reading...

Shirai McElroy is a textile mechanic, a hazardous environment specialist, and pitcher for the Core Mechanics.

McElroy was born in raised in Halifax, Canada. Her water-retaining fabric experiments gained the attention of the Moist Talkers, who became interested in extremely moist clothes.

When Polkadot Patterson was traded to the Core Mechanics, the Moist Talkers mounted a rescue mission. Upon delving into the Core and finding that Polkadot wasn't in mortal peril, McElroy decided the Core wasn't so bad, and has lived there ever since.

Hobbies

McElroy is a textile mechanic who dabbles in practically everything textile-related, from knitting to sewing to quilting to crocheting to weaving to kumihimo. McElroy is known for always having her hands full with making something, whether knitting during meetings or otherwise.

McElroy also specializes in safety measures, chemical engineering, and other topics related to handling hazardous metaphysical concepts. McElroy designs protective clothes for F.R.O.N.T. to delve further into the Core, capable of withstanding the environmental, thermal, and emotional hazards of the uninhabited areas of the Core without restricting movement and still looking fashionable as heck.

McElroy is known for experimenting with weaving unusual materials. The eyestalks which emerge from her hair are made of woven cells, sport Lidar sensors, and she can see out of them.

McElroy has a portable sewing machine for emergency wardrobe changes and adjusting her outfit from hour to hour to match her mood. Years of practice have given her the ability to quickly alter existing clothes or stitch together new outfits in a flash, taking approximately fifteen seconds for a complete costume change if in a rush. If she sees someone who seems cold, she has been known to offer blankets woven in front of their eyes.

McElroy believes that clothes are a key part of self-expression, and devotes lots of time to making sure her clothes can change forms and be customized to their wearer's desires. She can often be seen wearing shirts with a soft display which can change color to suit her mood, often seen displaying animated patterns or used for a variety of t-shirt-related memes. Many of her designs have built-in touchpads or synchronize with the wearer's thoughts to allow for seamless self-expression. She can often be spotted teaching Core dwellers how to work a sewing machine so they can adjust their outfits to suit their needs. McElroy also abhors clothes without pockets.

McElroy has also been known to enjoy cosplay. McElroy is a big fan of many of the ILB's star players, occasionally making outfits inspired by them or cosplaying as them entirely. McElroy's love for detail means onlookers often have a hard time telling McElroy in cosplay apart from the person McElroy's cosplaying.

Life of Crime

McElroy owes millions of dollars worth of debt, a number that increases every year. McElroy has been known to make trips Up, sneak around the planet undetected, steal debt from ordinary citizens, and then retreat back Down to a post-scarcity economy where debtholders have no jurisdiction. She uses a variety of homemade tools to help with these missions, picking locks with tiny knitting needles and deploying yarn bombs for quick escapes. McElroy loves the thrill of outwitting debt collectors pursuing her by ducking around a corner, using her sewing machine to create a new stylish outfit in a flash, and walking by her pursuers, unrecognizeable. Those few debt collectors who pursue her often find themselves growing to enjoy Core society and sticking around to discover new passions.

Projects

Some of McElroy's notable projects include:

  • Fiberglass gloves and catchers' mitts with extra acid resistance for Zoey Kirchner
  • Her Shellmet, a hard hat snail shell
  • Her personal sewing machine, a handheld model McElroy can often be seen tinkering with, featuring built-in scanners, and a dizzying collection of fabrics and threads
  • Parachute pants with built-in parachutes, rated for drops of up to 500 feet
  • Several personal pocket dimensions, made by altering the fabric of spacetime
