Little is known of Durham Spaceman's origin, and their team-mates are reluctant to speculate. When they showed up to the Garages clubhouse, standing large and imposing in their massive space suit, the team had assumed it was a prank, or perhaps an early, elaborate Halloween costume. But when asked, they said it was necessary for their survival. As such, no one has seen what lies beneath. Garages member [[Nolanestophia Patterson]] has stated that when hugging Spaceman, she can hear faint sounds of soft static coming from within.

One of Spaceman's most striking features is their helmet. The visor is not polarized, as would be expected of a standard spacesuit. Instead, looking into Spaceman's visor often offers nothing but a visage of inky blackness of limitless extent. This has been known to change at random, with distinct shapes and even detailed moving images appearing within. It seems that Spaceman has at least some control over this, as while pitching, a swirl of vibrant, eye catching patterns will appear from within the helmet, disorienting anyone caught in Spaceman's 'gaze'.

Spaceman is either mute, has taken a vow of silence, or otherwise opts out of verbal communication. Instead, they prefer to communicate through various sign languages, though will also use a text to speech for those hard of sight. However, on some occasions when asked a complex question, a die will appear within their helmet with a cryptic answer displayed. The message shown is near impossible to interpret through any conventional logic.

The two can often be found speaking to one another in this manner, although Spaceman has been noted to often choose songs without lyrics. MaX has been cited saying that xe understands what Spaceman is saying when playing these, but will not elaborate as to how.

They typically speak as a collective, however there are cases where they do not seem to agree, as an answer inside their helmet may display one answer while their signing signals another. Under periods of particularly intense system-based decision paralysis, the icosahedron in Spaceman's helmet will read "Ask Again Later."

Over the seasons, Spaceman has gained a reputation for being protective of the team. During Season 15, Spaceman took a consumer bite for Chorby Soul, leaving them vulnerable. During the following off season, they were seen climbing the Space Needle, where they retrieved a piece of concrete they then used as a bat, despite their status as a pitcher. The employees decided against taking action, saying it was great for business. While Spaceman has since replaced the bat with a fashionable mesh cap, the concrete bat can be seen on display in the [[Hotdogfingers Memorial Climate Pledge Garage and Parking Facility|Big Garage]].

COMMUNITY REPORTS
The remainder of this article contains lore created collaboratively by the Blaseball community.

Career with the Seattle Garages

Little is known of Durham Spaceman's origin, and their team-mates are reluctant to speculate. When they showed up to the Garages clubhouse, standing large and imposing in their massive space suit, the team had assumed it was a prank, or perhaps an early, elaborate Halloween costume. But when asked, they said it was necessary for their survival. As such, no one has seen what lies beneath. Garages member Nolanestophia Patterson has stated that when hugging Spaceman, she can hear faint sounds of soft static coming from within.

It seems that Spaceman has at least some control over this, as while pitching, a swirl of vibrant, eye catching patterns will appear from within the helmet, disorienting anyone caught in Spaceman's "gaze".

For an incomplete list of visual phenomena related to Spaceman's helmet, see Reported Helmet Sightings.

Spaceman is either mute, has taken a vow of silence, or otherwise opts out of verbal communication. Instead, they prefer to communicate through various sign languages, though they will also use text-to-speech for anyone who is visually impaired. However, on some occasions when asked a complex question, a die will appear within their helmet with a cryptic answer displayed. The message shown is near impossible to interpret through any conventional logic. Spaceman has since picked up the ability to speak via song clips, after spending time with Wyatt Mason X (MaX). The two can often be found speaking to one another in this manner, although Spaceman has been noted to often choose songs without lyrics. MaX has been cited saying that xe understands what Spaceman is saying when playing these, but will not elaborate as to how.

Spaceman is adept in all forms of gestural communication, from jazz hands to the Gallic shrug. Opposing teams have been reported using different call signs when Spaceman is pitching, as they are very quick to learn each team's hand gestures.

Spaceman is a plural system, referring to themselves with “we”, “us”, and “our”. Details about Spaceman’s system are unclear as, when asked for more details, Spaceman responds "We are Us. We are greater than the sum of our parts." They typically speak as a collective, however there are cases where they do not seem to agree, as an answer inside their helmet may display one answer while their signing signals another.

While Spaceman has since replaced the bat with a fashionable mesh cap, the concrete bat can be seen on display in the Big Garage.

Music

Spaceman has an affinity for the keytar and the theremin. They have been seen collaborating with Oliver "Oll-E" Notarobot on a project the two remain cagey about. They have also recently taken up VJing, using their helmet to project videos the likes of which no one has ever seen during Garage sets.

Trivia

  • Spaceman has displayed a talent for cooking, although their results are abstract and difficult to pinpoint. During the Bake, Rattle, and Roll, Spaceman presented a pie in the perfect shape of a tennis racket, stuffed with an unidentifiable berry. After verifying that the racket could be used in 1 v 1 tennis combat without crumbling, judges reported feeling a brief pulse of homesickness upon taking a bite, which added to their score.

Reported Helmet Sightings

Spaceman's helmet seems to contain a vast infinite void where near anything can appear. The following is an incomplete list of reported sightings:

  • A Betta fish who responds to the name "Herbert"
  • Retro commercials for products that never existed
  • two nebulae colliding, one billion years in the future
  • an MS-DOS command line
