History

Background

Karato Bean (any/all) is a five-time national surf champion. Prior to the first season, Bean had a video game deal in the works, but he decided to enter the ILB in memory of their late father, the innovator of the bean ball, with whom she had a tumultuous relationship. They honestly would much rather be surfing right now.

Season 5 Positional Change

On Day 6 of Season 5, Bevan Wise and Oscar Dollie were teaching York Silk how to do magic in the outfield. Unfortunately, there was an accident that caused chaotic reverberations, after which all the Fridays found themselves in different positions. Bean decided they liked batting and being in the outfield, saying, "I can finally surf while playing Blaseball." It's not entirely clear how they surf the outfield or around the bases when the Fridays aren't playing near a body of water, and at this point, reporters are too afraid to ask.

Season 6 Surfing Accident

As one of the only professional surfers not intimidated by Summers Pony's muscles, Bean offered to teach Pony how to surf on Day 62 of Season 6 in the middle of the game. Pony was given new boots for surfing, incidentally also helping their traction while baserunning, but unfortunately, at the top of the 7th, both Bean and Pony crashed into each other. Neither were injured, although Bean's favorite surfboard was destroyed. Bean only said, "It, like, works, but, you know, it's not the same," in the post game interview before leaving for the beach.

Transfer to the Spies

The Houston Spies' grand plan to rid themselves of Evelton McBlase II, the clone of Evelton McBlase, awarded them Hawai'i's famed surfing star, Karato Bean. But with the transfer to Houston came adaptation: the city's surfing scene is limited to catching the wakes of passing ships, but the Spies stadium's brutalist architecture lends itself quite well to skateboarding.

Alexandria Rosales, an experienced quad skater, often joins Bean in their attempts to "grind every sick rail in this joint." She has also taken up teaching Son Scotch—always seen in knee- and elbowpads, wrist guards, and Spies-themed helmet covered in stickers—to skate. The trio, often accompanied by noted thrill-seeker Theodore Holloway, can often be spotted skating together before matches, giving thumbs-up to onlookers.

Pitching

Always in search of the next great test of their skills, Bean left his position as hitter during Season 9. As pitcher, xe's shown unexpected talent. Most Spies fans—who were dearly mourning the swap, which followed the elbow replacements recently installed in both Math Velazquez and Denzel Scott—expected the increased downtime from only playing one in five games to distract Bean. Instead, she's shown remarkable dedication. Their days off are spent skateboarding around An Undisclosed Location, letting em come to each match refreshed and energized.

Trivia

• When stepping onto the mound, the crowd simultaneously cheers "Surf's Up!" to get Bean energized and "Surf's Down!" to discourage Bean from leaving in the middle of the game to surf.
• As a pitcher, Bean was known for giving up several runs in the late innings of a game.
