Box of Rylan O'Lantern Files

Dust billows as the file box lands on the table. While many archives in the Interdimensional Rumor Mill are unified in some way, this... definitely isn’t one of them. The accompanying Rumor Registry explains all of the contents... wherever it is... but for now you grab the folder labelled IF-11.581 and start reading...

Overview

Rylan O’Lantern is an anglerfish-like humanoid entity originating from the depths of the Trench. While there, ey work as an assistant-intern psychopomp to Nora Perez, and assist the deceased in coming to terms with their often untimely deaths.

Joining the Lift

When the Monitor was promoted to Food and Beverage Director, the workload for psychopomps increased significantly and more duties were handed to O’Lantern. This increased workload eventually culminated in O’Lantern being sent to ferry the souls of the recently deceased to the Trench. Unlike soothing the dead, which ey were particularly adept at, O’Lantern was inexperienced at reaping and while attempting to reap Tokyo Lift captain Stijn Strongbody in Season 17, ey strayed too far into a visibly corporeal state. The opposing team’s pitcher saw em and mistook em for Strongbody’s replacement, and the following pitch was recorded as a strike, looking. This strikeout marked the moment ey became the then-newest member of the Tokyo Lift.

Career

Despite playing professional Internet League Blaseball, Rylan O’Lantern is not a blaseball player. The cutthroat violence that characterizes the splort is not something ey particularly enjoy, and ey perform much better as a fielder than a batter. Additionally, ey have expressed worries about leaving the bulk of eir own job as a psychopomp to the already overworked Perez and the scant number of other psychopomps. Out of a sense of duty and love to both eir mentor and the work, O’Lantern still often leaves to reap souls between games, and, on a few notable occurrences, has left between innings when Perez is occupied and unable to collect a newly departed soul.

When questioned in an interview after a particularly sudden departure, O’Lantern carefully considered the question and answered, “Many souls are shocked and in disbelief when they meet their inevitable end. I’m the one who’s supposed to be there to make sure that one of the most chaotic parts of their lives goes smoothly, and to make sure they end up where they need to be. It's not an easy job, but someone has to do it. Someone has to outstretch a hand to those whose time is over and I can’t abandon them just because I have to play in this splort.”

Reception on the Lift

Rylan O’Lantern came to the Lift at a tense time. There had been three roster changes in the recent election; both team captains Stijn Strongbody and Lance Serotonin had been lost to incineration and redaction respectively, resulting in a void in leadership; team aunt Alejandro Leaf had recently shaken the team’s trust by shelling multiple people in a single game; and the Lift was back to the bottom of the Wild League after just a couple seasons of relative success. The team required someone who would bring a much-needed sense of stability back, and O’Lantern, however well versed in comforting others, was too youthful and inexperienced to be that person.

The response to eir arrival was initially cold, but O’Lantern quickly won the team over with eir gentle bubbly personality and high degree of emotional maturity.

Personal Life

On the Lift, O’Lantern first bonded with the strange alien figure of Elwin McGhee’s alternate over the unique difficulties of being another player’s replacement. Since then, ey have also formed a close relationship with Gerund Pantheocide, as despite Pantheocide being one of the former youngest members of the Lift and O’Lantern being of unknown age, O’Lantern’s youthful demeanor inspired Pantheocide to take em under their wing. Pantheocide is often heard referring to em as “kiddo” and “kid” during games. Additionally, ey play obscure bootleg video games with Grollis Zephyr and, much to the delight of other members of the Lift, bake with Mags Banananana biweekly, sometimes even allowing the older woman to use eir beloved sourdough starter.

Trivia

  • O’Lantern has assembled, repaired, and now owns three vintage motorcycles.
  • In O’Lantern’s freetime ey make and collect lights, which ey give to residents of the Hall.
  • O’Lantern’s anglerfish lure, hair, and gills glow in RGB gamer lighting.
  • O’Lantern has a penchant for gossip and prior to joining the Lift ey spent much of eir freetime in the Trench conversing with the inhabitants. Occasionally ey meet a player on another team and recognize them from embarrassing stories thought to have vanished with the dead.
  • O’Lantern takes care of a number of familiars from the trench, including a herd of hermit crabs, the ghost of a squid, and the animated skeleton of an ambiguous species of fish.
