The concept of personal names is not common among kappa. This player identifies with the essence of her home territory, a wetland area noted for its floral diversity.

Background

Herb Swamp is an environmental activist from Hokkaidō. She is the first kappa to play Internet League Blaseball.

After more than a century observing the encroachment of industry on her marsh, Herb Swamp became a reluctant figurehead - she uses the self-deprecating term "mascot" - for a local ecology protection campaign. It was in this capacity that she was invited to throw the ceremonial first pitch during a Tokyo Lift preseason match. She fell in love with the splort and was granted a position on the Lift's rotation.

Career with the Tokyo Lift

From the outset Herb Swamp pitched with surprising force, given her short stature, but webbed fingers made it hard to deliver the ball with any accuracy or finesse. After a difficult first half-Season the rookie was acutely conscious of her position among the League's lowest-rated pitchers.

The Lift showed their support by cheering Herb Swamp as Guest of Honor at the team's mid-season party. The gesture brought a flush to her moist green cheeks and a smile to her turtle-like beak, and as a confidence booster it proved successful beyond all expectation. The formerly reticent kappa became a confirmed party animal, prone to beating on teammates' doors at 3 a.m. wearing a lopsided crown of waterlilies and demanding to play one more round of pondwater pong.

The improvement in on-field performance was equally dramatic. Herb Swamp was now recognised League-wide as a bona-fide middling pitcher, while Lift staff hinted that her real strength lay with the bat. The switch never materialised; shortly before contact was lost with the Gamma 4 reality, Herb Swamp was selected to charge the Mic. Her current status is a matter of continued speculation. Lift player Art Dembélé noted that her fellow pitcher "came into the team with a waddle, and left it with a... Well, not quite a swagger. But a self-assured swaggle."

Personal life

Herb Swamp avoids using plastics, brand-new items or products designed to be disposable. Her Lift uniform is a simple garland of pink flowers draped across her leathery carapace. Off the field she will dress in flowing garments loosely woven from waterweeds and worn until they disintegrate.

She claims to lack the traditional kappa gift for mischief but was quick to appoint herself Team Trickster. Clips of her gentle dressing-room practical jokes, often at the expense of Seth Bitters, appear regularly in video compilations of the World's Most Tepid Pranks. She also claims to be skilled in mixing "natural remedies" from wetland plants. These murky concotions taste abominable but she is so excited to help a poorly teammate that they feel obliged at least to give it a try. It is not clear that even Herb Swamp believes them to work.
