Zeboriah “Riah” Whiskey was born and raised in western Tennessee. Whiskey is a Black woman, and self-identifies as human. Her mama was a bartender, her papa was a distiller, and her daddy was a former Paralympic wheelchair fencer. Whiskey was an only child and was doted on by all three of her parents. She grew up with a comprehensive knowledge of alcohol and a strong sense of splortsmanship.

When it came time for college, Whiskey was awarded a scholarship to a small college for arts and design in the Boston area. Her parents decided to move to Boston with her, but live well across the city, out of respect for Riah’s independence. Whiskey realized that she had both a passion and a talent for makeup, whether it was special effects, beauty makeup, or helping out at runway shows. She garnered a reputation around town for being ready to step up at a moment’s notice to help with short films and fashion shows.

To help make rent as she built up her makeup resume, Whiskey eventually became a part-time bartender at Margaritoville, where she struck up a friendship with the restaurant’s owner, Margarito Nava. Whiskey was especially appreciative that Nava never seemed to mind if she showed up with a full face of special effects makeup.

Nava ultimately invited Whiskey to join the Boston Flowers because of her splortsmanship, her athleticism, and her willingness to step up. Whiskey agreed, but wanted to focus on her makeup career, so as a compromise she joined the Shadows. She continued working as both a makeup artist and a bartender throughout the Discipline Era, Grand Siesta, and most of the Expansion Era.

Active Play

By the time Whiskey joined the Flowers via Voicemail, she already knew her teammates because of her time working at Margaritoville. She fit in organically with the team. Whiskey also managed to make a deal with the supernatural forces of the Garden: she would help tend some of the more finicky flowers, and in exchange the Garden would grow some flowers specifically to help her with her makeup looks.

In her first media scrum, Whiskey said, “Of course it’s weird being here… I was starting to think I’d never play. A lot of people will never play. I’m just lucky that I already get along with my team.” It should be noted that this interview was given while Whiskey was in the middle of a group hug involving Nava, Nic Winkler, Dunn Keyes, and several other teammates who could not be identified because their faces were buried in the hug.

Whiskey formed a strong friendship with teammate and fellow artist Adalberto Tosser. The two of them could often be seen working on art together: Whiskey with makeup, and Tosser with a pencil and paper. Their favorite locales included the Memorial Bat Forest, miscellaneous parks, the roof of Margaritoville, the roofs of some apartment complexes, the roof of Whiskey’s car, and the floor of the dugout.

In Season 22, Whiskey gained the Skipping modification. Whiskey remarked to a reporter that she didn’t feel as though she’d experienced much change following the modification. When the reporter pointed out that Whiskey had been jogging in place while giving the interview, she said, “Oh, that. At least I’m faster at doing makeup now.”

Whiskey was with the team during Season 24 and deeply mourned Tosser’s incineration. When the Flowers went to the Hall, then to the Vault, Whiskey recommitted herself to taking care of the Garden, insisting that somebody had to take care of the flowers as they hurtled through the immateria.
