STA 32.2 - THE TOWN OF BISHOP SUTTON

4vi - The End
Subject: Erika Jaeger Sr.
Voice recording transcript with annotation by the interviewer indicated [as so]

We were all watching on the television when the Avatar [this appears to be how the villagers refer to Sutton Bishop - ref. STA 32.1] was incinerated. Everyone was yelling of course, shouting instructions, but nothing was happening. I swear, in that last moment, it turned and looked at us. Right into where the camera would be, I guess. It had never done that before. Then the screen went all staticky, and there was this big jolt. People were thrown off of their feet, glasses smashed, they were screaming. I just - yeah, thank you. It still feels weird to talk about. I was right next to the window so I crawled over and looked out. It was… god it was the strangest thing I’d ever seen. [Consider the life of a villager of Bishop Sutton to understand the context of this statement.] There had always been this edge of the village, where things started to fade out. Then if you walked far enough into that edge you’d hit this wall, I guess? Like you just couldn’t walk any further. Except that wall was burning. It was so bright, like the light of the sun. Then slowly the whole village started to glow, literally like the sun was just burning it up. I thought we were getting incinerated then. People were still screaming, the television was still static. I remember thinking, like, it had been a pretty good run. We had got lucky, you know, getting the Avatar. [The subject appears to have a strange definition of luck.] So I was making peace with the fact that we were going to die, but as I watched this whole other world appeared beyond that wall. A desert, and it was weird because I recognised it instantly. Had seen it on the television a million times. There was the town, and the desert, and in the middle of it all our little British town. After that the shaking stopped, and everything stopped glowing, and we all kind of stumbled out to explore. It was Hellmouth, of course. Our town was just sitting on the edge of it. [See Appendix for a map]. People started coming out to see us, and it was all very overwhelming. We hadn’t been out of our village in years. But they were lovely, of course. Except as the sun went down… the village vanished. Just sort of faded with the sun, until it was gone. Those of us who hadn’t been in it at the time panicked. Thought we’d lost it again. I walked for hours around the spot, looking for any sign of it. Somehow, someone told us they could get a letter to the Sunbeams, who we knew pretty well of course. They must have rushed, because the Sunbeams got there in the early morning. Just in time to watch the village come back as the sun rose. And that’s how it is now. When the sun is out the village is there, and you can go in and out. When the sun isn’t there the village is back in the pocket dimension, like it used to be. I think - is it okay to theorise? Okay, thank you. I think it was the Avatar. I mean, to it, Hellmouth was home, you know? I think maybe it did it, sent us somewhere it thought we would be safe. Got a hand from the sun. We owe it a lot. But, yeah. Is that all you needed? Okay, great. You know - thank you. It’s nice to talk to someone about this.

The village of Bishop Sutton now remains, semi-permanently, on the border of Hellmouth. The residents appear to be adjusting well to their new life - ref. STA 32.2 5i, ii, and iii.
