Right before a pitch, one of Carpenter’s side-facing faces saw an image of Our Lady of Perpetual Friday reflected in the sunset on the ocean. Carpenter recognized her as a classmate from God Kindergarten (the kindergarten for gods they both attended) and is said to have exclaimed, mid-pitch, “Lady?? From kindergarten?!” This launched Carpenter into an internal conflict, with one side focused on the game at hand and another side wanting to stay, join the Fridays, and catch up with his old friend. Thus, Carpenter remained on the mound and pitched the reminder of the game as the pitcher for both teams before deciding to remain in Hawai’i with the Fridays.
