Dan "Hollow Man" Holloway is an outfielder for the Philly Pies. A former military scientist, he developed a serum for that can make a subject invisible. Instead of reporting his success to the military, Dan lies to an oversight committee and convinces his team to go right into human testing. The procedure is performed on Dan himself. The test is successful and Dan turns completely invisible. He enjoys sneaking around the lab in order to scare and play pranks on his fellow co-workers. The team becomes concerned that Dan is taking it too far. The procedure to return him to visibility fails, and he is almost killed.

Dan is quarantined in the laboratory due to his condition and the other researchers construct a latex mask for him to wear around the lab. Unable to cope with the isolation, he defies instructions and leaves the building. Driving to his apartment to retrieve some lab supplies, he sees TastyKake stadium, where he stops to hit a few balls. He is discovered when players notice blaseball rods seemingly floating on their own and hitting blaseballs out of the park. Impressed with his talent and invisibility, he is signed to the team.
