Workman Gloom is a player for the [[Charleston Shoe Thieves]]. Workman is the owner of Beasley Gloom, who is a dog who pitches for the Shoe Thieves. Workman was bringing Beasley to practice one day when the coach demons of the Shoe Thieves mistook them for a player. The demons thrust a blaseball rod in to Workman's hands and told them to get out there and get on with it. Presumably they are just too polite to tell anyone differently, as they are still slugging away out there for the Shoe Thieves, day in, day out.
