request: take another look at “in the shadows” section?

the entire section feels like it plays into some uh… unfortunate tropes about inventing magical bypasses for blindness, you know? when you’re writing a character that’s blind, it’s generally a really bad idea to tie it into a magical bypass for that disability, or to even have a “bypass” at all.

For sure! Thanks for flagging that! I've pulled the text from that IRM to this doc, and highlighted some sections that we can review.

If there's anything I've missed feel free to highlight that as well! I figure this is a good way to get started at least

All right I've done some rewrites in the linked doc! let me know what you think either on the doc itself, or just reply there if that's easier.

Okay here is a summary of the current changes;

  • completely removed any reference to Axel 'trading' his eyesight for forbidden knowledge (in hindsight wow yeah probably should have known to avoid that one, better to fix it now at least)
  • decoupled the two parts parts of Axel's above lore to be:
    • Axel's existing low vision was effected by the shadows, causing it to evolve into blindness
    • Axel's dealings with the shadows now explicitly say that he can use them to know FK stats, and have no kind of "bypass" for his blindness
  • Added some light mentions of cane use in the Shadows, and some more specifics for his guide dogs in later paragraphs
    • did NOT get too into his accommodations in the Shadows while adjusting to blindness, as per requests on the discord to not make it a focal point
  • Made a few light edits for phrases such as "keeping an eye on things" as per requests from discord
  • Made some totally unrelated fixes and edits for awkward phrasing, run on sentences, and the like.

Unless I hear otherwise I'll make this change live at some point on Friday, so please reply here or in the google doc before then if there are any other things we want to adjust.
