History

Background

Zippy DeShields is one of the younger players on the Breckenridge Jazz Hands. DeShields is noted for being an ex-student of the Dillon Reservoir Institute for Magical Things and People Who Want to Learn How to Do Things with Magic, an institution for witches. They dropped out to pursue their passion of skateboarding, where they met Tamara Crankit. Crankit introduced DeShields to Blaseball, of which DeShields became a huge fan. DeShields frequented Jazz Hands games, and thanks to their connection to Crankit, often got to watch games from the dugout. They became Collins Melon’s number one fan after seeing Melon’s grind rail skills. When Crankit was incinerated on Season β18, Day 3, DeShields was watching from the dugout. DeShields was pushed out to bat when no one else could fill the role.

DeShields’ time at the Dillon Reservoir Institute was not entirely spent doodling cool S shapes in the margins of their notes. DeShields proved incredibly masterful of transmutation magic, mastering the ability to turn into a turtle in hours. After learning this spell, DeShields quickly realized they had gotten everything they wanted out of the institute and dropped out. DeShields then learned by themself how to channel magic through their skateboard. However, since this meant DeShields would have to perform skateboard tricks as a turtle to change back, they were stuck as a turtle when they joined the Jazz Hands in Season β18. For all of DeShields’ active play until being moved to the shadows in the Season β20 Election, DeShields was forced to play in turtle form. In the Pit, DeShields practiced their moves and finally was freed from their turtle prison. Now they transform back and forth at their leisure.

DeShields’ youthful attitude has endeared them to their team. Many Jazz Hands players enjoy taking care of DeShields, with players rotating through babysitting duties. In kind, DeShields enjoys taking care of fellow player Baby Doyle.
