Volt beetles (Allomyrina scintilla), also called battery bugs, are large beetles nearly identical in appearance to the Japanese rhinoceros beetle found in the Undown. The volt beetle resulted from these aforementioned Undown beetles finding their way into the Core, evolving over time into the species that exists today.

Volt beetles are able to metabolize the nutrients from plants they eat into electrical energy and store it in their bodies. With this energy, they can cause their abdomens to glow and flash in a manner similar to fireflies. During metabolism, their bodies generate a static charge, resulting in a small static shock when touched. When threatened, volt beetles will release some electricity through their horn to deliver a more powerful shock to the attacker.
