Creation

Torus McGhee was initially constructed to participate in the Core’s Combat Roblotics League, a splort in which remote-controlled robots fight to the death. However, during a routine update, an intern accidentally installed sentience and pitching software instead of the standard battleblot programs. McGhee went missing from the battleblot arena, and was later found at The Pillars, insisting that they be signed on to join the team. The Mechanics complied, because they thought it was funny.

Torus’ current build, version 1.3, features modifications to McGhee's pneumatics. This retooling allows their all-terrain wheels to readjust their height with more force, allowing them to buck, rear up or jump to properly aim and catch the ball. McGhee also uses this extra degree of motion to express themselves, and can often be seen hopping around when excited or interested in something. McGhee has a custom-built, wetzel-shaped cold fusion reactor, giving them effectively unlimited power. Although McGhee cannot currently vocalize directly, they communicate through pneumatic hisses and servo droning, which their teammates understand and can translate into speech. McGhee has declined getting a voice synthesizer, stating that they prefer their method and that a vocoder would "push them past legal weight limits."

Pitching

McGhee's method of pitching is unorthodox and controversial. They prefer to use their flipper in lieu of traditional pitching appendages, and have developed a technique that allows the 60,000lb of force behind their flipper to throw the ball forwards instead of upwards. This unique method has yet to produce results, but teammates state that "Torus is having fun, and that's what matters."

Personal Life

Outside of the splort, McGhee runs a support group for newly-sentient robots and constructs. They reportedly think that gender is “neat” and have currently chosen to use they/them pronouns, though they are considering switching if they start feeling another way. When not participating in games, Torus likes to try and make themselves “useful”, often doing rapid runs between the Pillars and Mechland Burgers to snag refreshments for their teammates on the pitch, or greeting visiting teams very loudly.

McGhee works as a self-professed “amateur aeronautics mechanic." McGhee has refused to explain what this means, but they can often be found throwing large and heavy objects around the back alleys for "fun", and have stated that washing machines are their favorite type of ammunition.
