I'm planning to swap Torus' IRM over to a filebox format, as it's currently broken.

this is my first time doing this! feel free to suggest edits/let me know if i missed a step in the installation process. proposed irm:

edited to include shirai mcelroy!

"Torus McGhee is an experimental fashion mechanic, tailor, and resident recluse of the Core. One of the few members not originally from the Core, he has nonetheless become a staple of the community, and when the Core found itself in need of a blaseball team, he grudgingly agreed to pitch, as it would allow him more time to devote to other projects than batting would. Said projects include clothing made entirely of electroluminescent wire, adaptive clothing optimized for the Core’s fluctuating temperatures, and other innovative types of clothes that comprise the short list of things he will speak at length about.

His close friendships on the team include Jasper Ji-Eun, who has been known to spend time in Torus’ workshop doing nothing in particular, calling himself “there for moral support,” and Shirai McElroy, with whom Torus often collaborates with. Torus was also close with Ruffian Applesauce, who was incinerated on Season 13, Day 79.

Torus has been described by teammates as “gruff”, “such a softie”, and “weirdly good at sitting still for long enough that he starts gathering dust”; be advised that the last comment is unverified. Presently, he has yet to give an official interview, and has rarely been seen outside of his workshop."

Cool ideas! Ironically, people have been gravitating towards making Shirai McElroy a fashion mechanic who works with materials like EL wire and safety materials; maybe some of these ideas might work better on her? Torus's lore jam day is tomorrow on the discord and Shirai's is afterwards, want to post this there and get some feedback?

IRM re-installed

Inumo (talkcontribs)

The wiki mods were alerted to the installation of the IRM without prior discussion to this page. At time of discovery, it contained one entry - Torus McGhee/IF-29.33 - with default settings for the full page. The installation was performed by Beelijah, who can reinstall the IRM after 24 hours if there are no objections.

Inumo (talkcontribs)

In the course of uninstalling the IRM, it was noted that Torus McGhee/IF-29.33 was not previously discussed on the Talk page according to our collaboration policy. It will remain as a live page for ease of discussion, but if discussion arises within the next 24 hours it will be uninstalled and moved to a Pastebin to permit the re-installation of the IRM.

--Three, Two, One, Activate!-- Unlike most of the Mechanics, Torus was actually "born" in Core, instead of finding their way here. Torus was initially constructed to participate in the Core’s own Combat Roblotics League, a splort in which remote-controlled robots fight to the death. One Blooddrainy night, however, Torus found themselves with a few new upgrades, namely sentience and a lust for pitching. The morning after, Torus’ owner found his bot missing, only to eventually rediscover Torus at the Pillars, practically begging to join the team as a pitcher. With plenty of training and some special internal adaptations, Torus was ready to take on a new kind of battle.

Torus’ current build, version 1.3, features modifications to Torus’ hefty pneumatics. This retooling allows their all-terrain wheels to readjust their height with more force, allowing them to buck, rear up or jump to properly aim and catch the ball. Torus also enjoys using this extra degree of motion to express themselves, and can often be seen hopping around when excited or interested in something. Another appreciated feature added is a miniaturized wetzel-shaped cold fusion reactor, giving them effectively unlimited power. Although Torus cannot currently speak, they communicate through surprisingly emotive pneumatic hisses and servo droning, and with a little help from a teammate that’s familiar enough with them, this can be translated into speech. When asked about why they don’t get a voice synthesizer, Torus violently declined, under claims of such a device being “unable to be afforded with this weight limit”.

Torus is a bit of an unusual pitcher, preferring to use their flipper in lieu of traditional pitching methods. Through some very careful positioning, they’ve developed a technique that allows the 60,000lb of force behind their flipper to actually throw the ball forwards instead of upwards. This technique means they aren’t the best at pitching compared to more tried and true methods, but this doesn’t stop them from doing their best with their form. The most effective part of this strategy, however, is the sheer noise created by 250lb of hardened steel throwing itself airborne, causing batters facing them for the first time to often whiff their shots.

Outside of the sport, Torus is still getting used to the whole sentience thing. They think gender is “neat” and have currently chosen to use they/them pronouns, though they are considering switching if they start feeling another way. When not participating in games, Torus likes to try and make themselves “useful”, often doing rapid runs between the Pillars and Mechland Burgers to snag refreshments for their teammates on the pitch, or greeting visiting teams very loudly. They’ve a very friendly personality, if a little overbearing.

Torus works as a self-professed “amateur aeronautics mechanic”, although this usually amounts to throwing large and heavy objects around the back alleys for fun, with washing machines being a favourite.

Would it be okay if I rewrote this a little to make it dryer and closer to wikipedia's tone/voice?

Trihunter (talkcontribs)

Go for it. It's my first time doing this, so no issues with you doing some clean-up.

proposed re-write. The big changes are in tone and removing a lot of the narrativization, but there are a few minor lore details changed too --Three, Two, One, Activate!-- Unlike most of the Mechanics, Torus McGhee was actually "born" in Core. Torus was initially constructed to participate in the Core’s Combat Roblotics League, a splort in which remote-controlled robots fight to the death. However, during a routine update, an intern accidentally installed sentience and pitching software instead of the standard battleblot programs. McGhee went missing from the battleblot arena, and was later found at The Pillars, insisting that they be signed on to join the team. The Mechanics complied, because they thought it was funny.

Torus’ current build, version 1.3, features modifications to McGhee's pneumatics. This retooling allows their all-terrain wheels to readjust their height with more force, allowing them to buck, rear up or jump to properly aim and catch the ball. McGhee also uses this extra degree of motion to express themselves, and can often be seen hopping around when excited or interested in something. McGhee has a custom-built, wetzel-shaped cold fusion reactor, giving them effectively unlimited power. Although McGhee cannot currently vocalize directly, they communicate through pneumatic hisses and servo droning, which their teammates understand and can translate into speech. McGhee has declined getting a voice synthesizer, stating that they prefer their method and that a vocoder would "push them past legal weight limits."

McGhee's method of pitching is unorthodox and controversial. They prefer to use their flipper in lieu of traditional pitching appendages, and have developed a technique that allows the 60,000lb of force behind their flipper to throw the ball forwards instead of upwards. This unique method has yet to produce results, but teammates state that "Torus is having fun, and that's what matters."

Outside of the splort, McGhee runs a support group for newly-sentient robots and constructs. They reportedly think that gender is “neat” and have currently chosen to use they/them pronouns, though they are considering switching if they start feeling another way. When not participating in games, Torus likes to try and make themselves “useful”, often doing rapid runs between the Pillars and Mechland Burgers to snag refreshments for their teammates on the pitch, or greeting visiting teams very loudly.

McGhee works as a self-professed “amateur aeronautics mechanic." McGhee has refused to explain what this means, but they can often be found throwing large and heavy objects around the back alleys for "fun", and have stated that washing machines are their favorite type of ammunition.
