Box of Steals Mondegreen Files

Dust billows as the file box lands on the table. While many archives in the Interdimensional Rumor Mill are unified in some way, this... definitely isn’t one of them. The accompanying Rumor Registry explains all of the contents... wherever it is... but for now you grab the folder labelled IF-37.942 and start reading...

History and Appearance

Since Mondegreen’s debut in the ILB, debates about their true nature have been a hot topic. They are definitely either a dream or a dreamwalker, although reports are unclear on which is their real origin. Conflicting reports have identified them as a former art thief, a neuroscientist who experimented upon themself, a gifted super-spy, and a dream that became real.

Unclear origins aside, Mondegreen is well-liked among their peers. Teammates have noted that Mondegreen has an almost uncanny ability to fade into the background of any conversation or social gathering. They’re friendly, and prefer listening over talking.

Mondegreen’s dreamlike nature has granted them some shapeshifting abilities whilst in dreams. They can appear as any person, animal, or entity, but they are always innately identifiable as Steals Mondegreen. In their natural form, Mondegreen is a Black nonbinary woman. They are hard of hearing and typically use hearing aids.

Time on the Lift

Mondegreen joined the Tokyo Lift following the incineration of Gerund Pantheocide. The entirety of the Tokyo Lift made various remarks about being able to recognize Mondegreen, although none of them could explain why. Nonetheless, the grieving team welcomed Mondegreen and bequeathed them one of Pantheocide’s many swords.

Mondegreen’s career in active-play was short-lived; due to the ratified Voicemail, they entered the Lift’s shadows within the same season as their debut. No Lift players have seen them since. Teammates have speculated that their disappearance was in order to avoid being conscripted into working at the Beef Wings stand with unpleasant company. Despite their absence, Mondegreen kept appearing in the Lift’s dreams.

Time on the Firefighters

Towards the end of Season β23, players on the Lift noticed that Mondegreen stopped appearing in their dreams. Mondegreen’s absence was a cause for some concern until it was revealed that they had joined the Chicago Firefighters, ostensibly due to their Phantom Thieves' Guild. With all of the chaos of the season, neither team noticed their departure. Mondegreen has not disclosed whether they left the Lift because they heard The Call of Mx. Chicago.

Mondegreen was finally recognized by Gerund Pantheocide when they fell to the Firefighters following the Semi-Centennial. Pantheocide didn’t recognize Mondegreen, but she did recognize her sword, which Mondegreen was carrying. Following the revelation that Mondegreen was now from Chicago, they began spending more time with the team and appearing in their dreams, and occasionally helping out with duties in the Fire House.

Relationships

Rumors have abounded about Mondegreen’s relationship with former teammate Silvaire Semiquaver. Out of all the Lift, Semiquaver was reportedly the only one who knew Mondegreen by name. Neither of them has expressed much detail about the nature of their relationship, but comments from other Lift players suggest either a former or current romantic entanglement between the two.

Mondegreen has remarked that they would not consider their relationship with Coolname Galvanic to be a traditional friendship, but the two of them appear to be friendly anyways. Both Mondegreen and Galvanic share an interest in gardening and have been seen spending time together. Mondegreen has also said that they can’t enter Galvanic’s dreams, for reasons unclear.

On the Firefighters, Mondegreen and Pantheocide have a friendly but distinctly awkward relationship. Mondegreen said, “It’s probably weirder for her than it is for me, which is saying something because it’s pretty weird for me.” Mondegreen also has an intimate and unimpeachably strong friendship with Socks Maybe, much to the befuddlement of the other Firefighters.
