The Oilrat is a jet black swarming rodent of decent size.

Swarming

Oilrats are very communal animals and move in large, fluid swarms that appear like a wave of oil. Though they are quite friendly and far more curious than malicious, the size and speed of most oilrat swarms has been known to scare newer mechanics or those unfamiliar with the Core. Oilrat swarms have a strong sense of danger. Veteran mechanics, especially those in the more dangerous areas of the Core, know to pay attention to a fleeing swarm and follow them to safety.

Diet and Behavior

Oilrats require sustenance to survive and grow. Oilrats are naturally vegetarians and prefer to eat fruits, seeds, and plants that are wilted or past the time that humans would eat them, though not rotten. They also need a significant amount of iron and will eat metal shavings if they do not get enough from the rest of their diet.

Domestication

Although wild oilrat swarms can include up to thousands of members, small swarms can be domesticated. Denizens of the Core have tamed swarms as small as five oilrats as household pets. Their diet makes them a particularly beneficial pet. In addition, some CORNERS couriers tame slightly larger swarms of 20-30 oilrats as companions and package-carrying helpers. Occasionally, such swarms stay with a family (biological or not) of deliverypeople and, over time, develop a unique ability to disregard physics for an extremely short duration in order to protect their companions.
