Jacoby Podcast/IF-19.403

Personal Life

Jacoby Podcast is a tape recorder, or, to be more specific, an amalgamation of the shadows from the inside of the tape recorder they inhabit. They stand at a whole three inches tall, give or take a few centimeters, with a small Crab symbol in white on their chest. Outside of games they mostly get around by being carried by a teammate or a group of similarly small crabs; although they can get around on their own, it has been described as an “unpleasant auditory experience long-distance” and “something to avoid at literally any cost.”

When in solar eclipses or under the black hole, Podcast’s form has been noted to, on rare occasions, “grow to eclipse view of the Crabs’ defense and, in general, everything on the field” as they pitch, although no videos or Crabs will verify this.

Although Podcast has not said much in interviews about their time in the Shadows, usually sticking to short, quick answers, they have released a small series of tapes to the public dated to their time spent there. Most tapes had semi-corrupted audio, or caused adverse physical effects to listen to, and the rest were reported to “melt like wax” upon improper handling. When asked about this, Podcast declined to comment.

Podcast does not have an apartment, as it would serve as an inconvenience to them; instead, they have taken up permanent residence inside of the Crabitat alongside Squid Galvanic, inside one of the several rooms meant for standing defense.

Tapes

In opposition to tapes recorded before their emergence into active play, Podcast’s tapes recording their experiences in Blaseball or their constant clawmentary during games they’re pitching cause no physical or mental harm to listen to, and are kept in storage for public re-listening at a local library.

Several Baltimore residents who attended games in the Crabitat have shown up to local news stations with tapes in hand, found in their pockets or in bags after they left a game Podcast was pitching. When played, these tapes had a full copy of the clawmentary from that game, as well as a signoff from whatever Baltimore Crabs player was the fan’s favorite. Podcast has declined to comment on this as well, other then saying it’s “a deliberate choice” and that they “hope people enjoy!”

Despite their last name, Jacoby Podcast does not, in fact, record podcasts, although they have expressed interest in the concept of them.

Jacoby Podcast/IF-36.216

Origins

Jacoby Podcast was once a simple recording device brought to life after years of loving use by a local college radio station (as well as several dips in the Inner Harbor, which some argue may be a more relevant factor). Jacoby dabbled in clawmentary as he was coming together as an entity, and the energy and passion of the Crabs fanbase was something he nucleated around like a pearl. He was real enough after a passionate clawmentary of the Crabs cinching their playoff spot that the umps signed him as the Crabs’ Postseason Birth. Jacoby was excited to be on his beloved Baltimore sports team, even if only watching from the Shadows - and then Crabs went up. It was "rough to wait out all that time with the rest of the Shadow Crabs," but Jacoby held out hope that one day the Crabs would come back and he would get to play. And, sometimes despite everything, dreams really do come true.

Jacoby's physical form is shrouded in mystery, though the rumours will change every time you look. Some say that he manifests in the shadows of doorways and away from the light Privately, Jacoby secretly hopes that actually playing on the field will give him the energy to manifest the physical, human body he wants, though we hope that in time he can come to accept himself as already the individual he wants to be, regardless of his physical embodiment.

On the Mound

Due to his lack of physical form, Jacoby is known for an unusual pitching style, which is to say that no one has ever seen him throw the ball, or swung at one of his pitches. At his games, you will instead hear the call coming from the clawmentator box of the Crabitat, and know the result of the hit. While some may have been concerned that this may be in violation of one of the most straightforward rules of blaseball ("the pitcher must throw the ball"), there has never been a batter who argued the calls being made and people keep insisting to the Umps that they "must have just missed it." This has also sparked a number of interesting relationships with other game commentators in the league, as they have found themselves suddenly sharing a space with a broadcast partner.

Casting a Wide Net

One curious side effect of Jacoby's pitching style is that several other pitchers for the Crabs have picked up on narrating their own games as they play. This has led to largely positive results. While Adalberto Tosser's cutting critique of forms seems to have started intimidating his opponents, Finn James has found similar success in simply coming up with new fish based puns to distract the opposing team. On the other hand Brock Forbes seems to have created a technique that is literally incomprehensible to most where he will start listing off facts about the players attributes that seem to have no bearing on their ability to bat, not to mention aren't all real words. Being spoken out loud seems to cause a disorienting effect, and people have reported that they have trouble hearing what he's talking about when calling attention to a batter's thwackability, moxie, patheticism or divinity when on the plate.

Finding a Rock

When joining the Crabs, Podcast was quick to see co-captain Brock Forbes as a mentor, both in play and outside the diamond. The two of them had similar pitching styles and Forbes was quick to explain the finer points of his plays when Podcast asked. The two fell into a comfortable routine of communication and practice, with Forbes being understanding of Podcast’s competitive nature and tendency to lay face down in the outfield when things weren’t going their way.

In season 16 after a tumultuous election Forbes was now playing for the Boston Flowers and Podcast playing for the Ohio Worms. Despite attempts from Forbes, Podcast was not receptive to attempts to reach out with cries of being abandoned in Ohio despite reminders from other Worms that this was a regular outcome of the election, and not a personal slight against Podcast themself. On Season 16 day 47 Podcast was forced into a reunion between when the Flowers played in The Wormhole, and the rotation lining up to leave Podcast and Forbes on the mound. The game went into extra innings, with Podcast letting up two home runs in the top of the 14th to end the game.

They refused to speak to Forbes afterwards.

After a reverb of the Flower’s rotation, Forbes was given another opportunity to pitch against his student on day 75. The game once again went into extra innings, with the Worms being shamed with 2 runs in the bottom of the 10th. This time when Podcast attempted to snub their mentor, Forbes simply applied their considerable experience in martial combat to immobilize Podcast while he talked about his feelings. It is not clear what was said in The Garden but in the weeks since the two have been seen hesitantly meeting up when not in games to practice together.

When speaking of their relationship, Jacoby was quoted as saying “Brock is great and all, but next time we play he won’t make it to extra innings.”

Returning to the Crabs

When Podcast was traded back to the Baltimore Crabs from the Ohio Worms in Season 19, they were aware that their mentor Brock Forbes had left the team, but actually experiencing Baltimore without him was another thing altogether. Podcast quickly found there were plenty of other things to take their mind off of this however, as this was also Podcast’s first time playing and practicing alongside Lorcan Smaht, who Podcast knew better as “that rookie pitcher who showed up to replace me”. Since Smaht emself was unaware of this rivalry, ey frequently took the time to invite Podcast to hang out after practice and be an all around excellent teammate. Luckily Podcast’s feelings on this were interrupted by the attentions of the Crabs newest player, Zeruel Kramer, who was fascinated by Podcast’s pitching, and frequently asked them to model it for zer as ze worked on zer “Arm of God” project. This kind of flattery alongside Kramer’s non-existent pitching skill was quick to win Podcast over, and Kramer even managed to get Podcast to practice what ze called “being okay with being bad at things”.

Before their journey took them across the league Podcast was delighted to discover that they had developed a strange form of carcinization that picked up where their blacklight mode ended. While at first it only appeared to be a strange noise that Podcast began to emit when angry or excited, with the help of resident Carcinization expert Pedro Davids they were able to pinpoint this as a growl produced by teeth in Podcast’s stomach, much like that of Ghost Crabs, and that Podcast could control the sounds they could produce. Furthermore when they entered blacklight mode it was possible to see them glowing through Podcast’s mouth which they described as “really cool actually”. Upon confirmation of their carcinization the first thing that Podcast did was call Forbes in Boston to tell him about it.

Jacoby Podcast/IF-36.219

Origins

Jacoby Podcast has lived their life alone on a comet from the Delta Cancrids cluster, and they were alone for a very long time. At some point in their existence they picked up on sounds traveling through space, specifically on broadcasts being sent out from earth. They were intrigued and spent days upon days tracking down these signals, falling in love with the world they represented. In particular they took great interest in: the idea of gender (choosing to present themselves as non-binary), the idea of religion (deciding to explore Judaism), and the world of splorts, going out of their way to dig up signals from game commentaries of the Discipline Era.

Enamored with the immaterial plane, Podcast was distraught when they heard about the plight of the Baltimore Crabs after their ascension and was determined to be of assistance. While it is unclear if they were able to render any assistance to the Baltimore Crabs, or if they were simply pulled along for the ride, when the Crabs returned to play, Podcast was eager to join The Crabs roster, and took the chance when offered a position to pitch in season 12, giving a much needed break to Bevan Underbuck.

Life in Baltimore

Podcast was eager to experience life in Baltimore and frequently took the time between games to explore, experience and be a part of the day-to-day life of anyone they had encountered. This had made Podcast a fast friend to Parker Parra, who similarly found the way most people lived to be fascinating. As Para had more experience dealing with the Immaterial Plane, the two of them were better off together than Podcast alone who, for example, reportedly thought that "Podcast" was a common last name. That being said, Para and Podcast had been banned from several museums, aquariums, and shopping centers for being a "public disturbance".

Cast from the Pod

In honour of what first attracted them to earth, Podcast started their own podcast. Unfortunately, they never stopped creating podcasts, and most of them are objectively terrible. For example;

Title Episodes Rating Description
Fishing for Praise 16 A podcast featuring Podcast and teammate Squid Galvanic where they review the exhibits at the Baltimore aquarium.
The the Jacoby Podcast Podcast 4 A show based off of recordings that Podcast recorded back in space where they performed mock interviews to nobody. Now that they're on earth they play back the recordings and banter with their past self in a mix of improvisational comedy and poignant lessons about growing up.
Haute Pursuit 11 Podcast and Luis Acevedo do deep dives into contemporary art crimes across multiple mediums, often rumoured to have been committed by Val Hitherto.
███████ N/A An unreleased crime podcast Podcast recorded with Forrest Best. While allegedly this show was nothing more than the sounds of sirens, scuttling, and a supposed Break and Enter, no one has ever managed to listen to an episode, as Best stole the only copy of the recording of the pilot before it aired and threw it into the Chesapeake bay. Rumour has it that it is still out there somewhere
No Claws for Alarm! The Truth behind Carcinization 3 An exploratory podcast where Podcast speaks to citizens of Baltimore about the effects of carcinization. However be warned because after several listens the podcast itself will begin to carcinize, and its final form is just scuttling noises. It is still comprehensible to everyone in Blatimore however.
The Brock Tumbler 10 A podcast featuring Podcast and fellow pitcher Brock Forbes. While not a popular show due to what Forbes describes as his "voice for telegram", the show does retain one loyal listener who claims that the podcast "hits a lot better in 5D"
Love Tap 36 An advice show featuring Adalberto Tosser. Which is an anecdote mill focused on navigating relationships in the punk/metal/mosh scene. Though it often includes large segments of Tosser sharing "wild zany stories" that include countless flings, heists, hops, and dives in from his life.
Bottom of the bucket 6 A longform journalism podcast about infrastructure stalling in municipal Crabitat construction
Hot To Trot 17 A show with Tot Fox where she and Podcast discuss the best forest trails in the area.
Meanwhile Back at the Ranch 25 Featuring teammate Silvaire Roadhouse where they discuss the latest gossip in the ILB.
Straight from the Horse’s Mouth 317 A commonly updated series featuring Logan Horseman and Podcast discussing basically any topic of Logan’s interest.
What we do in the Shadows 10 A series of interviews with Bevan Underbuck and Enid Marlow regarding the mysteries of the Shadows of Baltimore.
Gone Fishin’ 2 A short-lived series where Podcast interviews Nagomi Mcdaniel, who unfortunately makes a poor subject. The entire second episode consists of the sounds of a small fishing boat containing Podcast and Mcdaniel getting progressively further away from the recording equipment.
Silent Whispers 120 A series of recordings where Podcast claims to interview his teammate Harrell, however any attempts to listen to the episodes seem to be an entirely one-sided conversation.
Foam Batter’s Box 11 Podcast and York Silk review various boffer weapons. These episodes are well known for devolving into Jacoby and York doing “field testing” and dramatic “death” scenes on air.
Days of Our Blives 489 Cantus Hojo explains the complex plot and relationships of the soap opera, Days of Our Blives.

Podcast's most popular production by far however is the livestreamed recording they stream while they pitch in games. While some describe the casts as "down to earth" and "a real insight to blaseball," others have commented that they "wish Jacoby would stop letting bases get stolen while they're making advertising plugs for their sponsors."

Ohio is a State of Mind

Podcast had a rough start with the Ohio Worms, spending their time pulling pranks as an outlet for their frustrations. They were not impressed with the Worms’ performance and also felt underappreciated and unwanted by their first team, the Crabs. With the Worms divided on winning and tanking, Podcast had felt there was no place for their play-style and goals on the team for many seasons. Their relationship with fellow pitchers, Xandra Pancakes and Patchwork Southwick, soured when the two took items that improved their performance despite already being highly rated players.

It also did not help that the angel who inhabited Ephraim Ladd’s body had been an ex.

During the Season β16 playoffs, Podcast had gotten closer to Vessalius Sundae and Scratch Deleuze by watching the Crabs’ games together. Since then, Podcast and Sundae realized they had similar frustrations and were often found sitting in silence together. Sundae’s experience with shapeshifting abilities had aided Podcast as they explored what they could be. Deleuze was a very soft and cuddly companion.

When Podcast had finally warmed up to the team, they went through a Blacklight transformation, granted by the magic of the Wormhole, and light poured out of them. They looked like a disco ball. After the initiation, Podcast would frequently shine on the mound.

Despite their improved relationships with the team, Podcast did not feel at home at the Wormhole. They still desired to be on a team that wanted to win and had a clear idea on what that meant. The Worms, noticing Podcast’s turbulent feelings, had reached out to Parker Meng and proposed a trade.

Meng had agreed.

Together, Meng and the Worms rigged the election to send Podcast back to Baltimore. In addition to the trade, the Worms also constructed a Jacoby Podcast memorial for The Augusta Chadwell Memorial Park and Promenade, the plaque reading, “Here lies Jacoby Podcast, devoted friend to team captain, Xandra Pancakes”.

Podcast was not and never had been a devoted friend to team captain, Xandra Pancakes.

Podcast left for Baltimore with a flickering bat, knowing that if they didn’t feel right on a team, they could make their way to somewhere they did.

They still keep in touch with the Worms. Podcast and Deleuze keep up an intense and competitive game of Cup Pling Plong. Hojo receives daily photo updates of Podcast’s plant-critters. Loubert Ji-Eun frequently sends Podcast prank mixtapes that are not prank mixtapes.

Jacoby Podcast/IF-36.232

Origins

Much of Podcast's history before joining the Crabs is unclear and could unfortunately only be taken at her word leading to what might be a somewhat unreliable personal history. According to Podcast, she was "a integral part of the Shelled One Pods," and was "vital to the success of any and all plans that were carried out by the Shelled One himself". She will then go on to describe how she was "carelessly cast off by the uncaring and cruel god, and left alone in this cold and unforgiving world." Naturally she decided to move on with her life by picking up the time honoured splort of blaseball.

Joining the Baltimore Crabs

After being cast off from the pods, Podcast joined forces with the Baltimore Crabs as they returned from their time in the Big Leagues. Drawn to their history of god killing she swore to take revenge to take vengeance on all Gods for being left behind. Privately, teammate Baldwin Breadwinner has commented that she thinks this sounds more like a "bad breakup, and she'll probably get over it, but I'm glad she's at least cheerful about it." She does however seem to be a favourite of Evelton McBlase II, who was happy to gain someone as enthusiastic about elaborate schemes and pointy collars as he was.

Other Crabs describe Podcast as an excellent pitcher, but one that spends a lot of time asking about the Crab's experience in the Big Leagues, and if there were any other, cooler gods there that might be interested in a sidekick.

Are You There Greg? It's Me, Jacoby.

Podcast had heard rumors about the Ohio Worms having their own God that had fell from the sky. When she arrived, she was dismayed to learn that the God, whom the Worms had affectionately nicknamed, "Greg", was dead and could only communicate to a select few which did not include her.

She brought a flickering bat from the Ballpark's gift shop, hoping that it would bring her to a different God, one preferably alive and in need of a sidekick.

Podcasting

Podcast does not know what a podcast is and wishes people would stop asking her that.

Jacoby Podcast/IF-53.494

Hot Mic

Jacoby Podcast was a suspected stage name for a pirate radio personality in Baltimore. During the absence of the Crabs, Baltimore's standing within the local theography was called into question, and it was made clear that the municipal organizations in charge of preparedness against divine crisis had been relying far more on the blaseball team than was publicly reported. Investigations into corruption and embezzlement at the local and county level were largely fruitless on the surface, but a hard-to-pinpoint radio host broadcasting on the Wild Low Frequency (WLF) radio band gained infamy at this time for getting deeper into the case than any of the established media organizations; something that honestly didn't surprise anyone because nearly all of Baltimore's media sphere was sensationalist tabloids existing merely as vessels for bad splorts puns.

As tensions grew between the people, the city, and the surrounding godscape, the tone of Jacoby's show shifted into a platform for activist organizations, networking on the behalf of protest cells, unions, civil orgs, irreverent militias, personalities and regular people alike, across the city's social landscape. It became apparent to activist leaders that the show was operating independently, the information the host was receiving was not coming from any particular individual; however, the information and direction on the show was unnaturally accurate, and its greater strategy effective, if a little dramatized in its pacing.

Across the seething streets, in the hideaways and coves, in the homes of the tired and the angry alike, listeners tuned in daily. When the first of many gods crossed the threshold of Baltimore, people were ready. When the municipal staff tried to shred the infrastructure accounts papers, people were ready. When city councilmembers sought to make underhanded deals with the divine in their desperation, the people were there to meet them too.

Live Wire

Once control of the city tilted in favor of grassroots organizers, Podcast changed gears into juggling several smaller radio projects. They included, but are not limited to:

  • Updates and accountability on the now reinvigorated construction projects in the Crabitat, projects in the case of divine retribution that allowed for the corpse stadium to hold the whole city under siege.
  • Arthropods of Baltimore, a human interest block (or whatever you would call it for nonhumans) that touched on stories from residents across the Oldest Bay.
  • A music and poetry slot dedicated to hyperlocal artists. Many people featured on the slot have no idea how Jacoby got their hands on their work in the first place, and a handful hadn't successfully presented or published their features to begin with.
  • A godswatch scanner broadcast which informed what residents were calling the 'New Crabs' or the 'Shadow Crabs' of any divine activity at the borders of the Baltimore domain. While the city got its anti-god infrastructure situated, many credited Jacoby with maintaining the city's hold on the domain by directing those more capable of handling their own against the probing divine.

On the return of the Crabs to the Immaterial Plane, the team was relieved to see the city still standing, better than they left it, even. Seeing how essential Jacoby's directives were to that, how similarly they carried themselves and the Shadow Crabs to the Crabs during the city's last great crisis, the team sought out Podcast in hopes of looping them into the team directly. However, every time the signal was triangulated, the pursuants would arrive at an empty live room, still on air, the seat by the mic still swinging slowly as if the host had left seconds before, always just a moment too late.

Parker Parra hypothesized that Jacoby Podcast was never themselves a person. The voice on the radio was all that there ever was. Following that thread, the Crabs finally got a hold of the figure by calling out for them over Parra's ham radio kit (one of their many abandoned projects), and convinced them to come on-board, followed by a gripping interview that told us all about exactly what happened to the team in the Up and you surely have already heard it by now so the details will not be repeated here.

Pitch Perfect

How does Jacoby play a game? Well, the answer is very simple.

Finding a Rock

When joining the Crabs, Podcast was quick to see co-captain Brock Forbes as a mentor, both in play and outside the diamond. The two of them had similar pitching styles and Forbes was quick to explain the finer points of his plays when Podcast asked. Crossed Swords

Podcast and Loubert Ji-Eun disagree on what underground "pirate radio" is.

Jacoby Podcast/IF-71.972

Background

Jacoby Podcast is a member of the species Coenobita compressus, also known as the Ecuadorian hermit crab or the Pacific hermit crab. In order to pitch, they sit atop a pitching machine, but not that pitching machine. It's a different pitching machine. Podcast picked their last name on the mistaken belief that it was a nautical term, though they have no desire to change it, as Podcast thinks podcasts are "pretty neat."

Despite the fact that C. compressus is normally found on the western coast of South America, Podcast claims to be a Baltimore native. Podcast has been accused of fabricating their history for "crab clout," with many alleging that they are actually from the Appalachia region. They have denied this, insisting that they were born and raised in Maryland, and that they don't even know what a mountain is. Podcast has been the prime suspect in at least one missing persons incident, though the case against them was dropped due to lack of evidence.

No True Crab

Though initially very private about the issue, Podcast has become very forthright about how despite being a crustacean, they are not a true crab. As hermit crabs have already undergone Carcinization through evolution, Podcast struggled to find a way to personalize the process. They credit fellow pitcher Finn James with helping them cope with this, stating that "she helped me realized that carcinization isn't about your shape or your physical changes, it's about becoming the version of yourself that you're happiest with."

While they were still playing with the Crabs, Podcast was known to wear synthetic red shells with the team's logo emblazoned on it. These shells are custom made to be safe for them, and they have been a strong proponent raising awareness of how painted shells are dangerous for hermit crabs. They also occasionally wore an eye-stalk hat on top of their eye-stalks, for the goofs.

Trade to the Worms

Expressing interesting in "getting out there and meeting other bugs" and a desire to help ex-Crab Luis Acevedo return to xer home in Baltimore, Podcast transferred to the Ohio Worms at the end of Season 15. New teammates Vessalius Sundae and Patchwork Southwick helped Podcast adapted to their new inland home, building them custom tide pools to help mimic their natural habitat. Podcast has had a tense relationship with Pitching Machine, as it has been mistaken for Podcast's pitching machine before, despite being a batter. The relationship between the two improved significantly after Machine left the team, and both have expressed excitement about the prospect of pitching against each other.
