Enid Marlow/IF-19.136

Personal Life

Enid Marlow has not disclosed much of her personal life, and her teammates are similarly close-lipped about it. She has expressed interest in necromancy when told rumours about fans or teams performing it, taking out a leather-bound notebook to write notes in. The teams involved in the resurrection of Jaylen Hotdogfingers have most notably seen visits from her, asking after methods and the Trench. The amount of information she has collected about it is unknown, as well as her plans of what to do with it.

Marlow is always seen wearing a black, fluffy dress and elbow-length gloves, even to bat. It is unknown if this is a personal dedication to the aesthetics surrounding necromancy, or something else. Witness reports allege that behind the gloves is “nothing but decay and bone.” Underneath parts of Marlow’s hair, witnesses also report that there is “no flesh, just a straight view to the skull.”

Interpersonal Relationships

Despite the desire to return to the dirt rather than being burned, a sentiment a lot of the Ohio Worms share, Marlow has openly expressed that she’s interested in the “methods” of incineration, as well as the inner workings of the Hall of Flame and necromancy itself. This has not led to any animosity with the Worms, however; out of respect for her former teammates, Marlow kept the necromancy research out of team spaces, and in return, the Worms passed along possible leads under the table.

Marlow features in a few of the stories Luis Acevedo has shared from the Crabs’ time in Up, and xe has described her as a friendly face. The pair were seen together before their trade in the Season 14 Elections, getting drinks at a local coffee shop. It is unknown if this was related to their trade, or if it was simply two friends meeting. Either way, their opinion of each other in interviews appears to be amicable, with “a little bit of friendly hostility,” as one reporter describes.

Her time on the Crabs is not for the public eye to know of.

If at first you don’t succeed

Enid Marlow was first born in the 1400s, and was considered to be a cunning woman, a phrase here used to indicate a woman who practiced “good” magic to heal people/livestock, predict the future with divination, procure love with charms, and find lost items or treasures. Somewhere along the way, Marlow became what was considered to be a malefica, a phrase here used to indicate a person practiced magical acts intended to harm, mixed in with a side of diabolism. As the times changed, she worked as a private investigator, fortune teller, metaphysical shop sales person, and a host of other professions until she stumbled upon a ritual of munch interest, and a promise of eternal life and rebirth. At some point, presumably, Marlow died of natural causes. However her name came up again recently as the Ohio Worms joined the ILB.

Try, try again

Enid Marlow was born in a year, and was considered to be haunted, a phrase here used to indicate that a woman claiming to be her past self was an ever constant companion. Luckily for Marlow, she had a natural talent for magic and an interest in the occult as well as tailoring her own elaborate “classical goth” outfits. Her very first ritual was performed in a gorgeous black and lace gown alongside Wanda Schenn and Augusta Chadwell to turn them all into star blaseball players. This may have had something to do with Chadwell’s half-demon state, and Schenn’s refusal to speak to Marlow. When presented with the opportunity to encourage the necromancy of York Silk in Baltimore, Marlow leapt at the chance, which unsurprisingly further soured her relationship with Shem. The ritual went through mostly as intended, however this time it was her that was banished to the Crab’s shadows.

Persistence Pays off in the End

Enid Marlow was traded to the Baltimore Crabs in the season 14 elections, and immediately joined Bevan Underbuck on the bench, and quickly moved into their apartment, much to Underbuck’s quiet dismay. Not one to freeload however, Marlow was quick to take after her own long-time apparition and taught Underbuck the basics of magic and spellcasting which they took to with surprising ease. Marlow also took the time to learn about Carcinization a process unique to Baltimore where people took on Crab-like features. Despite the social faux-paux, Marlow was quick to enquire about the details of many people’s changes, when they started, and what powered them - though she was frustrated to find that no one who knew would speak to her about it.

Finally after spending 3 seasons in the shadows, Marlow joined the Crab’s active roster in season 18, eager to put her many talents to use.

Moths to a Flame

In Season 20 Marlow found herself facing an unexpected reunion with a former original player for the Ohio Worms, Kaz Fiasco. While the two had never been extremely close, they found that the shared experience of joining the Crabs was something the two of them could bond over. While Fiasco was unsure of Marlow’s feelings on their reunion due to the unconventional ways that she showed affection, Marlow would privately admit that she saw Fiasco as a goofy, annoying younger sibling. It was however extremely unclear which of the two were older considering both of their tenuous connections to their own chronological ages.

An Alternation

During the season 22 Election, Marlow was the subject of an alternation, though the exact methods of this were unclear to many observers. It seemed as though Marlow remained the same person she always had been, but was now tied into the crabs in an unusual blend of her own occult powers and the natural cycle of Carcinization in Baltimore. There have been several different reports of exactly how this manifested in Marlow, with some seeing her shadow moving independently of Marlow herself, others reporting layers of fine chiton, and some even still claiming her eyes have gained an usual shine when observed under the right kind of light. What all of these reports share however is the pearlescent details and colouring, taking after the ritual the Baltimore Crabs use to memorialize their dead.

Given Marlow’s own history with necromancy, this has raised many questions about the ritual of alternation itself. However it is unknown if this was even a deliberate ritual by Marlow herself, with some claiming that she was attempting to siphon off the power of the Olde One and had it backfire, while others claim it was an attempt to seize control of her own carcinization to mark herself as a part of the team. Marlow herself has been quiet on the subject, often avoiding questions or outright threatening those who ask about it in after game interviews.

The End of the World

In Season 24 with the opening of the Hall of Flames Marlow found herself all at once fascinated and terrified by the prospect. While this did give her previously unheard of access to the dead (especially with Kennedy Loser refusing to pass on her questions to his inhabiting players), this also gave the dead previously unheard of access to her. As much as Marlow wished to spend her time taking notes and interrogating deceased players, she spent a great deal of time avoiding running into the ghost of Augusta Chadwell. Since the two of them had not been on speaking terms when Chadwell had died, Marlow had done her best to simply avoid the issue by not thinking about it.

Chadwell’s return meant that her mind often wandered to that first ritual Marlow had performed to make them star players. After great thought Marlow attributed it to “a miscommunication. I assumed that Augusta and Wanda knew what they were getting into - apparently they disagreed when things went wrong.” When pressed Marlow elaborated that “I greatly respect them both, so obviously they must have at least a basic understanding of the arcane arts? How could they not?”. The massive hole in Marlow’s logic could not be pressed further, as the imminent heat-death of the universe caused the interview to wrap up early.

The Event Horizon

As the Crabs approached the Event Horizon Marlow could be seen giving furtive glances to the Hall of Flames behind them, while maintaining her focus ahead to her future with the Crabs, as well as her reunion with her first team, the Ohio Worms, and her old research partner Trinity Smaht. With her knowledge and experience behind her, she joined the Crabs as they steered towards the Event Horizon.

Earth to Earth

Enid Marlow has always had a fascination with death. Ever since she first read about the phenomenon, and heard of the revival of Jaylen Hotdogfingers from the Hall, Marlow began her attempts to join the ILB to get closer to the game and it’s mysteries. Not willing to let simple things like “not being good at blaseball” stop her, Marlow put her magical talents and determination to use and performed a ritual to enhance her own abilities at the game, eventually managing to make her way onto the Ohio Worms when they joined the league in season 13. However her fate would take her elsewhere when elsewhere in the league on season 14 day 87star player York Silk was incinerated by a rogue umpire.

Ashes to Ashes

Upon Silk’s incineration, Marlow turned her attention to Nagomi Mcdaniel. While it cannot be said for certain what involvement the two of them had in the resurrection of Silk, it is known that that Mcdaniel had come to Baltimore in search of a master occultist, and that Marlow and Mcdaniel were seen together in Baltimore many times in the days leading up to York Silk’s return. Marlow’s plans did not account on being pulled into the shadows however, and while surprised and frustrated at first she grudgingly accepted her fate, and planned for her eventual return, moving in with fellow shadowed Crab’s player Bevan Underbuck, and insisting that this was all according to her grand plan. Underbuck remained unconvinced, but was happy to let her crash on their couch which, depending on reports was either in Underbuck’s already overfilled apartment, or in an undisclosed part of the Baltimorian wilderness known to house Forrest Best.

Dust to Dust

After 4 seasons in the shadows, Marlow was finally added to the main roster of the Baltimore Crabs, coming out of the shadows into the public eye. Despite the results of her previous attempts, Marlow still remains very interested in the veil between the living and the dead. She has frequently been found talking to teammate Finn James about her experience with the Olde One, with James politely reminding her that, “If you ask me about how I died one more time I’m going to leave you in the bay and make you swim back”.

Not to be deterred, Marlow has also pointed her questions towards the haunted Kennedy Loser in an attempt to converse with both Loser, the many ghosts that haunt him and the Clawliday Inn and specifically trying to get in touch with now dead targets of necromancy such as Sutton Picklestein and Tillman Henderson. While patient with the questions regarding his own situation, Loser has noticeably drawn up boundaries with Marlow about “pestering the dead”. Marlow seems to be complying with this request so far, but it shall be seen what direction the practical applications of her interest take next as the seasons unfold.

An Unexpected Partnership

Even after entering active play without them, Marlow still remained staying at Bevan Underbuck’s appartement, and as the seasons wore on, the two of them were tasked with watching the apartment across the hall belonging to Brock Forbes and Adalberto Tosser when Forbes was traded to Boston and Tosser made frequent trips to visit. Several seasons later when Tosser was also traded to Boston, the two took up looking after the place full time. When Forbes was incinerated they began to question if Tosser would ever return to the old apartment, and in Season 24 Tosser himself was incinerated, answering that question promptly. The two roommates began spending more and more time in the appartement with its ill fated owners now gone, and informally taking up residence there as Finn James moved herself into Underbuck’s original appartement. While the two were never able to achieve the same level of cooperation as Forbes and Tosser, it was hard to deny the unexpected synergy the two shared when living together, with Marlow finding a strange respect for the former Friday, and Underbuck learning the art of standing up to Marlow through the simple act of insisting she do her share of the dishes, and stop leaving her ritual sacraments out on the coffee table when they had guests.

Enid Marlow/IF-52.105

Abstract and Introduction

Enid Marlow is one part talented young witch, one part clever occultist, and one part praying mantis. Marlow began her pursuit of the arcane arts at a young age, and followed them with great enthusiasm throughout her life. She was especially interested in the theoretical applications of magic and the arcane, as well as the fundamentals of dealing with dangerous entities such as gods, spirits, demons, and fans. Various unknowable powers described how Marlow, “Did not so much make a pact for power, but rather wrote a research grant proposal for forbidden knowledge”. In particular Marlow has an interest in necromancy that drew her into blaseball, even going so far as to cast a ritual to improve her ability to play to ensure she made the team.

While Marlow was first drafted to the Ohio Worms as when they entered the league, she was quickly drawn to investigate the case of York Silk in Baltimore, and spent two seasons in the Baltimore Crabs’ shadows before coming out to play in season 18.

Materials, Methods, and Associates

In her time on the Worms, Marlow taught Lenny Crumb, passing on both tips and tricks for studying, as well as magical tidbits that could be used to further the Worm’s strategies. When Marlow moved to Baltimore, she found a fellow occult enthusiast in Trinity Smaht, who was quick to draw Marlow into the mysteries surrounding the ultimate fate of The Olde One. While both Marlow and Smaht were capable researchers on their own, together the two of them formed a strong bond over their interests, and absolute delight in uncovering old notes of one of the most accomplished occultists and demonologists in the field, the former Crab Baldwin Breadwinner.

Further Research Topics

Owing in part to her part-mantis nature, Marlow also has a strong interest in bugs and insects. This comes both from her steadfast mind finding solace in the field of entomology, as well as her natural kinship with insects that allows her to communicate with many forms of bugs. Marlow has not indicated if this is why she keeps handfuls of worms and other insects on hands to toss at nosy reports in post-game interviews, but it can be assumed that at the very least those are related facts.

Marlow’s bug-like nature also reflects in a fascinating combination of her Blacklight Mode from the Ohio Worms interacting with the start of her Carcinization with the Baltimore Crabs. Her pre-existing exoskeleton’s interaction with the chitin growth that is often associated with carcinization has yet to be seen, but the less common bioluminescence has taken hold strongly with her existing traits.

A Departure and Reunion

As the seasons progressed, Marlow found her research partner Trinity Smaht being traded across the league to Mexico City and Miami. While she was first hurt by this change, this did draw aer sibling Lorcan Smaht towards Marlow, who was also missing Trinity. While Lorcan shared none of the occult enthusiasm of eir sibling, ey did seem to enjoy getting Marlow out of the house to enjoy local concerts and theme parks. The two of them also did make frequent trips to both of Trinity’s new teams to visit and catch up, taking a special interest in Miami where Marlow and Trinity were once again able to cross paths with the legacy of Baldwin Breadwinner, a known occultist and demonologist. When the two stumbled on some old notes of Breadwinner’s, the scene was described by Lorcan as “a disaster waiting to happen, so I just went out to pick up dinner while they were drawing runic circles or whatever. They seemed to be having a good time at least”.

Marlow herself has been quiet on the subject, often avoiding questions or outright threatening those who ask about it in after game interviews.

A New Role

Upon Marlow’s new commitment to the Baltimore Crabs, one of the first duties she assigned herself was that of the Crab’s newest batting captain, since no one stopped her before she grabbed the hat and whistle for the job. Unfortunately Marlow’s coaching has been seen as unconventional, unproductive and “mostly seems to involve throwing knives and other dangerous objects at other players”. While the Crabs have been mostly unharmed, after one major incident, Kennedy Loser did eventually catch wind of this and let her know he appreciated her commitment to the team, but did want her to stop throwing knives at their teammates. When asked about this incident Marlow simply responded that “Alston is always going on about all those wacky adventures, you think he could dodge like one knife, but nooooo, Ken made me stay the emergency room with him the whole time he was getting his stitches.”
