D.O.W.N. stands for the Department of Workplace Non-injury. Similar to OSHA, but with far more diverse experience dealing with black holes, unfire, slime molds, and the like, D.O.W.N. is a volunteer-run loose organization which helps the Core Mechanics and other Core dwellers avoid injury while working on projects.

D.O.W.N. members are volunteers who care about safety, and the organization itself is a loose group of safety-conscious members accountable to the community at large. There are many safety-conscious people who prefer not to call themselves D.O.W.N. members, and many who do.

While OSHA guidelines might prohibit enterprising mechanics from building flamethrowers, D.O.W.N. members would consider blanket bans like this "a temporary fix that doesn't address the structural dangers nor reasons why someone might want a flamethrower" and "Boring; flamethrowers are pretty cool". Instead, D.O.W.N. prefers to help creators modify their projects so the original idea can work safely - for example, by creating flames that harmlessly phase through organic matter, or building sentience-detecting sensors so a flamethrower can automatically shut off if pointed at a living being.

D.O.W.N.'s goals include but are not limited to:

  • Helping mechanics who are overworking themselves take breaks
  • Creating safety posters and PSAs about infinite shrimp or other potentially dangerous topics
  • Building guard railings in the dead of night
  • Replacing broken glass with stronger transparent materials such as acrylic or transparisteel
  • Installing ramps and teleporters in place of stairs
  • Encouraging mechanics to think through the consequences before jumping into a project
