Ok the pitch on this one is that because Derrick is so unremarkable he actually has a perception filter that prevents people from noticing he's there and makes them forget he exists pretty much instantly. You could even take it a step farther on the funny scale and claim that instead of being incinerated everyone just forgot Derrick ever played for the Garages and/or that he exists in general and if he ever gets released everyone can just be like "who"
