This Is a Tragedy is the best awful band in Hellmouth.

History

The story of This Is a Tragedy’s founding has been lost to time. They have been called This Is a Tragedy since the founding of the band, and also since the loss of Moab. They quickly became established as one of the most popular bands in Hellmouth, earning a dedicated cult following. Outside of Hellmouth, the band remains mostly unknown, except for a similarly dedicated group of people who hate them.

This Is a Tragedy are supported very strongly by the Hellmouth Anti-Tourism Board, as visitors to Hellmouth have been quoted leaving the Hellmouth area specifically to avoid having to hear any more of their music. An enjoyment of their music may be an early sign of Adaptation. They are particularly useful to the Anti-Tourism Board in preventing concerts by the Seattle Garages. Every time the Garages have attempted to play a concert in Hellmouth, attendance has been low due to This Is a Tragedy concerts coincidentally playing the same night.

This Is a Tragedy are banned from the state of Nebraska.

Members

Boatswain Gloom

Boatswain Gloom is the lead singer of This Is a Tragedy. They are a fish inside a bowl. Gloom is able to shapeshift into any fish which is able to fit inside their bowl. They are known for their unique style of singing, their many failed attempts to ‘stage dive’, and their insistence that they would in fact be very happy to date a vampire.

Bethany

Bethany plays kazoo. A later addition to the band, Bethany is also known as ‘Overly Adapted Bethany’ due to the dramatic nature of Bethany’s Adaptation. When one reporter asked how this could be the case, given Bethany’s very normal appearance, Bethany replied “Yes, exactly”.

Glass

Glass plays the harp and is also one of the more prolific song writers of This Is a Tragedy. Their music has unique themes, including long monologues apparently narrated by a ‘shadow’ who speaks to them as they dream. These fictional tales are often considered the closest that This Is a Tragedy come to ‘high concept’ work.

Banjonicle

Banjonicle is both a banjo, and a legally distinct blionicle. He plays the banjo. His literally life-long experience with his instrument does not seem to have had any bearing on his skill.

Hot Goo Summer

Hot Goo Summer is made of goo and is very hot, both figuratively and literally. They play the bass for This Is a Tragedy, and are known for their variety of catchphrases, including “2 HOT 4 GOO”, “You may look but you cannot touch”, and “Not for human consumption.”

Sexton Fantastic

Sexton Fantastic is the bassoonist for This Is a Tragedy, and does not let its bird features (including beak) stop it from attempting to play its instrument. Fantastic is the only member of the band who also participates in Sols Melodious, and people who listen to its work with that group are often surprised by its talent, which is never displayed in its work with This Is a Tragedy. It has been quoted as saying “Why would I actually try when playing with TIAT? That group gives me the freedom to be terrible. And no, before you ask, I’m not related to Sexton Wheerer.”

Dr. Permadeath

Dr. Permadeath was once the mascot of the band, and later joined as the accordion player. She is a rabbit, and takes great pleasure in thumping her foot as she plays, with complete disregard for timing or beat.

Jenny H. Growler

Jenny Hijinks Growler is a guitarist and the newest member of the band. She joined after the 11th time she jumped on stage to perform with them and Gloom told her “Just save yourself the energy and join us backstage before the concerts start”. Jenny’s rainbow guitar strap is covered in pins and patches, and she has been described as “obviously a werewolf” due to her hairier appendages and her full set of canine teeth, and as a “goth flannel lesbian”. She also has three smaller eyes underneath her left eye which are theorized to be her Adaption, and are often fixed on the neck of her guitar. Jenny has never been seen at a concert during the full moon.

Music

The music of This Is A Tragedy defies definition. Attempts by music journalists have ranged from “terrible” to “bad” to “brain-melting”. Nagomi Nava, noted This Is a Tragedy fan, has been quoted as calling their music “high art”.

Their style is characterised by a complete lack of ability, almost impressive considering how long they have been playing together. Despite claims by fans of the band that their music is "subversive", the general consensus is that This Is a Tragedy's genre-defying work creates a genre all of its own - purely terrible music.

AQUATIC: OR, WE ARE GOING TO GET SO ****ING SUED

When I was here before, I could look you in the eye

Because I wasn’t stuck in a fishbowl, which sort of makes me cry

You’re so high above me, and you’ve got two legs

You’ve got ****ing legs, I wish I had legs

But I’m a fish, I’m aquatic

What the hell am I in a bowl for? I don’t belong here

Don’t care if it hurts, I just wanna have some arms

I want a human body, I WANT ****ING ARMS

I want you to notice, when I am around

Because you don’t right now, because I’m a ****ing fish

And I’m a fish, I’m aquatic

Why the hell am I in a bowl? I don’t belong here

She’s running out the door

She’s running and I, I ****ING CAAAAAN’T

I’M A FIIIIIIIISH

None of you know what it’s like, you’ve got no clue

I used to be like you, I want to be like you

But I’m a fish, I’m aquatic

What the hell am I doing here? I don’t belong here

I’m trapped in a fishbowl :(
