Official League Records

Mathews joined the ILB as a lineup player for the Yellowstone Magic with the Return of Blaseball.

On Season β4, Day 15, Mathews was exchanged to the New York Millennials due to Feedback. Mathews was replaced by Alyssa Harrell.

In the Season β6 elections, Mathews swapped positions with Bates Bentley due to the The Best Defense blessing, becoming a pitcher.

During the Season β9 election, Mathews received the Friend of Crows modification due to the passing of the Forecast: Birds decree.

History

Penelope (rhymes with "Antelope") Mathews is actually a construct made entirely out of volcanic rock found within deep beneath Yellowstone's surface, closer to the famous Yellowstone supervolcano. While this makes her a conduit for the natural arcane energies flowing through Yellowstone that give the team its power, it also means that she is unable to wield them and must bat using a simple wooden baseball bat. Being a conduit for magic in a team full of mages, she enhanced all of the Magic's luck, hence the nickname "Lucky Penny." The nickname could also refer to her being a zinc deposit. People also seem to suggest that her geologic nature may be the reason she tries to steal bases so frequently, no matter the circumstances of the game, but this could also be blamed on her just really enjoying thievery.

Mathews tends to speak in ALL CAPS dialogue, due to her capitalist nature. The team asks her to quiet down a little before games, making whispering her pregame ritual. She also has aspirations to be the branding manager for the team. She has an expert sense of when to release fan-favorite souvenirs, such as the floating blaseballs, the color changing pendants, and the helpful "Points of Interest between Second and Third Base."

Mathews is known for her surprising consistency at bat. She flips an "enchanted" coin before taking her swings, hitting on heads and missing on tails. Francisco Preston gave her the coin to dupe her into believing in herself in a misguided dadly lesson, but because of these predictions happening before the actual pitch she just loses confidence when it comes up tails and performs worse. If she'd stop flipping the coin and believed in herself, she'd probably be a better hitter.

After joining the New York Millennials, Mathews was interviewed about her adjustment to big city life. "IT'S ACTUALLY PRETTY SICK," Mathews intoned. "TURNS OUT THERE'S A VOLCANIC HOTSPOT GROWING UNDER ASTORIA. DURING SIESTAS I ATTUNE TO THE MAGMA AND THINK ABOUT HOME. MY FRIEND HALEXANDREY THINKS IT IS FORMING IN RESPONSE TO MY PRESENCE AND FOR THAT I DEEPLY APOLOGIZE. ALSO THERE'S THIS REALLY CUTE CAT WHO I SEE IN THE BODEGA SOMETIMES, IT HAS THIS LITTLE WHITE SPOT ON ITS FOREHEAD."

Not long after she left the Yellowstone Magic, a fan tossed a coin into Magic player/geyser Washer Barajas to make a wish. This coin was caught in Wash and remains in their geyser, spinning infinitely. Magic fans have taken this as a sign that Lucky Penny's lucky spirit is still with them.

As A Pitcher

While visiting Central Park during the Season 6 postseason, fellow Millennials players Winnie Mccall and Sandie Turner encouraged Mathews to try her hand at pitching after she skipped a stone so hard it traveled all the way across Central Park Lake, striking a mounted police officer on the opposite shore and knocking him from his horse. The trio quickly vacated the scene as onlookers rushed to ensure the horse was unharmed. The three are still at large.

Mathews has adapted quickly to her new role on the mound. She continues to flip her coin, hitting the strike zone on heads and missing it on tails. She also pitches equally well with both arms, casually switching between the two on a whim without much strategy or purpose. These traits make her surprisingly unpredictable for a pitcher who only ever throws fastballs. While her pitching style is still rough around the edges, Millennials ace pitcher and rotation leader Theodore Cervantes speculates she will be one of the league's elite pitchers if she can figure out how to put backspin on the ball with her rocky hands.

On the Seattle Garages

After being traded to the Garages in season 15, Mathews found herself amidst a team hit hard by tragedy and Consumer bites. Her first impression on the team was defending herself with “AS MUCH GUSTO AND ENERGY AS SHE COULD RUSTLE UP” against a Consumer attack. Trying to keep it positive, she spent a lot of her time exploring the mountains and trails of the forest outside the Big Garage with Theodore Duende, filling a gap left in his hiking club when Goodwin Morin was traded away from the team. Duende has been heard to say in interviews that Mathew’s homemade GORP trail mix recipe is “unusual, but useful in a pinch.”

Mathews found her niche when the Big Garage installed a Smithy in Season β17. She was excited to lend her magmatic skills and enthusiasm to help others, and now runs Pyro-tastic Pyroclastics, a blacksmithing and makerspace workshop, out of the Seattle Shadows Co-Op. At the shop, she offers a number of different repairs, engraved sigils and enchantments for bats, gloves, hats, shoes, jerseys, jewelry, guitars, keyboards, drumsticks, keychains, mobility devices, iPhlones, and Segways. She has also become a “VERY ENTHUSIASTIC” proponent of the right to repair, and teaches classes on how to repair your own devices. Mathews has also taken to creating a moss graffiti concoction that she will not hesitate to spray all over the headquarters of any angry tech company who comes complaining about her repair classes.

Mathews got along well with Fairwood Patchwork, and before Patchwork was traded to the Crabs, Mathews had promised to take her on a trip back with her to Yellowstone to check out some interesting trails and compare faery and arcane knowledge. She still hopes to reconnect with Patchwork sometime in the future. Mathews has also hung out with Lenjamin Zhuge, and is surprised at their disbelief in land-dwelling cryptids, considering that she has “MET THE JACKALOPE BEFORE, AND HE’S A REALLY NICE GUY.”
