Background

Recognizable for being a regular freelance contributor to the alternative news weekly Puget Sound Sockeye, a frequent volunteer and coordinator at local queer community centers, and a champion roller derby team captain under the name “Berry Blast,” it is hard to find someone in any local scene who hasn’t at least peripherally encountered Marion Shriffle.

A longtime pillar of the local community, Shriffle was a regular presence around the Big Garage and across Seattle for many years before formally joining the team. A member of the Muckleshoot nation, who are composed of the Duwamish and Upper Puyallup peoples, Shriffle has lived in the Pacific Northwest her whole life. She is particularly involved with queer advocacy and environmental activism and stewardship—he and his partner Robin work with LGBT youth from their nation, and have often taken in local youths looking for a place to stay until they can get back on their feet. A number of her investigative articles for the Sockeye have focused on sustainable fishing and keeping a watchdog eye on pollution and overfishing from corporate interests.

Shriffle is also known for his coverage of local bands for a music column in the weekly, and had previously encountered various members of the Seattle Garages through her involvement with music journalism and through his involvement with music himself.

Joining the Team

Shriffle met former Garages bassist Tot Clark after answering a request for a fill-in producer on his third solo EP. He was impressed by her skills and introduced him to former Garages team captain Theodore Duende. Duende and Shriffle became friends, though a rumor that sprouted that they are distantly related cannot be confirmed.

When Clark was incinerated in Season 24, Shriffle was meeting with Seattle Garages stadium commentator Mama Duende (of no relation to Teddy) to discuss a new collaborative project. Seeing the vacancy on the field, Shriffle jumped over the stadium barrier to take Clark’s place.

In an interview after the game, Shriffle was asked why he chose that moment to formally join the team. He was heard to reply:

“I figured that if we’re this close to catastrophe, there’s no time like the present to join in and help someone who needs it. I’m not going to just sit here and watch it happen.”

On the Seattle Garages

Since joining the team, Shriffle has been described by teammates as a levelheaded and reliable person to talk to. She has agreed to avoid coverage of the Garages band and team in her reporting due to conflicts of interest, but has gotten involved with the maintenance of the Salmon Spire after being introduced to its existence by Lenjamin Zhuge and Alaynabella Hollywood.

Shriffle maintains a patch of trailing blackberries in the Browning Cash Torres Krueger Memorial Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Pledge Greenhouse. She waters them with a spray bottle which she also has been known to jokingly spray Theodore Duende with when he decides to take on too many duties pertaining to his previous captainship position. Shriffle also often carries snacks and drinks around in a cooler, which he passes out at games, protests, hikes, concerts, and other events.

Shriffle is somewhat blunt in her advice at times, but many team members have described him as helpful and encouraging. Shriffle once advised Betsy Trombone to get a proper short-cropped haircut after many years of giving themselves haircuts with their knife, and a number of the Li'l Roadies have gotten their hair dyed at Shriffle’s house after he found them using Kool-Aid instead of dye.

Shriffle taught Oliver Loofah how to rollerblade when she was younger, and has been cited by Loofah as one of the people who made them feel more comfortable with identifying as genderfluid. Shriffle, Loofah, and Summers Pony often practice rollerblading at a nearby local roller rink. Shriffle handed off roller derby team captainship to Loofah when he got old enough for the responsibility.

In interviews, Shriffle has often discussed her personal value of maintaining a balance when taking on responsibilities, even amidst the activities and involvements he finds important.

“It took me a long time to figure this out, but one person can’t do everything. I love roller derby, but I ended up stepping back as captain when I got more involved with local journalism, and when I joined the team, I stepped back from that too a little. I know I do a lot–I figure I probably might change that eventually, and hey, I probably do too much for some other people too, but it’s probably different for everyone.”
