Testimony on Lady Matsuyama's Identity

Stories swirl about Lady Matsuyama in the Interdimensional Rumor Mill. Wiki archivists have dutifully recorded some of them in a Rumor Registry, summarized for easy research. These are the notes for one story from IF-51.310...

Lady Matsuyama, also known as "The Lady" is seven foot tall robot, constructed at a metamaterial research facility by her creator, Hideko Matsuyama, an esteemed roboticist. Her ai was patterned off of a brain scan of her creator, who built her as an attempt to preserve their research after a containment breach at the research facility. Hideko's only chance to escape was an interdimensional gate generator, which would eviscerated all biological matter that passed through it. Thus, Matsuyama was sent in her stead, where she would find herself at the CORE. Lady Matsuyama has a complicated relationship with her creator, possessing an incomplete sum of Hideko's memories, and largely considers herself a seperate person. She still posesses Hideko's talent for robotics, and indeed delights in tinkering with her own body, finding ways to push herself to her limits through clever engineering.

Prior to Ascension, Matsuyama didn't quite get Blaseball. It seemed baffling and opaque to her; her creator being an atheist, she bristled at the idea of playing under the whims of fate the gods had in store. But over time, she found a certain love for the game first through the love and camaraderie of her teammates, then through the surprising success she had at performing the very simple task: "hit ball". Certainly, she began to appreciate the hilarity of the contradiction of her contention with the gods and the values she inherited from her creator. Nowadays, Matsuyama takes great pleasure in pushing the limits of her engineering towards the arbitrary ends of Blaseball; she enjoys the feeling of finding meaning in defiance of fate. Notably, she modified her body to interface with the Core’s power grid, which allowed her incredible performance at home but left her running on battery power during away games.

Personal Life

Matsuyama wears a ring hand-crafted by Bottles Suljak to signify their marriage. Many have asked "what is love", and the answer is an incredible power source. One marriage carries enough energy equivalent to several kilotons of TNT. If asked, Matsuyama will pontificate for hours on her love for her wife. Her tail is powered directly by a small fraction of the love that the two share. Suljak has been known to tenderly tinker with said tail on occasion.

Lady has been known to ride motorcycles in her free time. She can often be seen tinkering with her primary motorcycle, which sometimes has rocket engines instead of wheels, sometimes legs. Although Lady grumbles about how adding a sidecar ruins the aerodynamics, Bottles' dejected face has enough to guarantee one's presence.

Time on the Hawai'i Fridays

In a Feedback event during Season β17, Matsuyama was traded to the Hawai’i Fridays for Christian Combs. Her arrival mid-game was more of a surprise to the Fridays than past Feedbacks, as she was one of the only two Evolved players on the Fridays (the other being Lizzy Pasta).

After joining the team, Matsuyama became a close friend of Fenry Marlow, who helped select “Lady” by the Commodores as her theme song with the team. She has also become a confidant for original Friday Stevenson Heat, and was one of the Fridays’ de facto strategists - when the team decided they actually wanted a strategy.

Relationship with Suljak

Matsuyama maintained her relationship with Suljak, who proposed to her slightly before she was traded to the Fridays. During the team’s frequent beach clean-ups, a number of arcane bottles were found by the Fridays, which Matsuyama insisted contained puzzles. Each time one was found, she solved the arcane puzzle and returned the bottle to the sea, where it quickly sank below the waves - presumably returning a message to the Core and to Matsuyama’s then-fiance.

Some have speculated that Matsuyama's long-equipped Holey Ring was her engagement ring, and it was her most treasured possession for many seasons. She convinced the Smithy at the Choux and the mysterious Salmon to assist her in its upkeep after it was damaged. After the ring broke for a second time, Matsuyama forged a new Ring in Glitter weather on Day 66 of Season β23. After forging this new engagement Ring, she discarded the broken Holey Ring that Latesiesta.

Late Expansion Era

Matsuyama was well known among the Fridays as incredibly level-headed, even within a team known for their chill vibes. Both Fans and teammates have noted that, despite her low place on the lineup, she regularly lead the team in sacrifice runs batted in. This composure and dedication to what was best for the Fridays continued both on and off the field, as Matsuyama had become a constant presence for her teammates in times of trial. Whenever unexpected Election results or Weather effects struck the team, Matsuyama provided a voice of comfort and reason for the Fridays. Her teammates have remarked that she seems to understand the will of the Fans more than many. This was perhaps best exemplified when she accepted a share of teammate Don Mitchell’s Ego as a result of the Ego Share blessing: while many other Fridays were wary of the effects of the Ego that had already taken Valentine Games from them, Matsuyama understood the long-term goal and willingly shouldered some of Mitchell’s Ego.

Due to the sharing of Ego, Matsuyama was temporarily drafted into the Rising Stars with several other Friday’s, including Mitchell, Beck Whitney, and Nicholas Mora. She has continually refrained from commenting on her experience. Since the Semi-Centennial, many fans have speculated about how difficult it must have been for her to not only be forced to face previous teammates and friends like Games, James Mora, Fletcher Berger (II) and Clare Ballard (III), but to eventually lose Mitchell and Mora to the Vault Legends as well. Regardless of inner thoughts, Matsuyama held her head high throughout. While Whitney did not return with her after the game, Matsuyama was the first Friday to welcome Parker MacMillan to the team and traveled back with him to Hawai’i after his extended time in the Vault. She also passed along many messages to teammates from those in the Vault, the contents of which have never been revealed publicly. Matsuyama remained on the Fridays until their incineration on Season β24, Day 12.
