COMMUNITY REPORTS

Jonathan Catalina (he/him) is an older Mexican trans man originally from Avalon, California, located on Santa Catalina Island. As a young child wandering the Los Angeli, Catalina was found by the Fae Queen of Avalon and whisked away to live in her court. After moving away, he founded a small bar, the Three of Swords, and joined the Lovers to support his newly made friends.

History

The court of the Fae Queen turned out to be the perfect place for the young autistic man, who felt immediately at home in its strict rules and structure. Growing up surrounded by the loose hums of other realities and the shifting web of time visible through his adopted mother’s magic, Catalina quickly grew into an adventurous young child, spending hours watching the oozing links between the worlds and following alternative players through the tides, wanting nothing more than to join them one day on the field.

On his 18th birthday, Catalina dove into one of the alternate worlds he spent so long watching, sinking quickly into a world completely unlike the one he grew up in. Everything was bleached in bright light, noises were sharp and astoundingly loud, he was immediately overwhelmed, shutting down and unable to process what he thought was the biggest mistake of his life. Through the bright explosion of new sensations he felt a familiar one, and was met with the hand of the original Kichiro Guerra on his shoulder.

She helped him collect himself and brought him to her favorite tea shop in the Tough Love San Francisco. When he returned from his visit, teacup and first edition copy of Tokyo Meow Meow in hand, he knew he was prepared to face the world outside his home. His mother agreed, dropping him off in Kichiro’s old home, San Francisco.

The Three of Swords

After a few years of fumbling on his own, Catalina found himself the proud owner of a blossoming community gay bar inside the San Francisco LARP, something that suited him well with its simple scripts and repetitive tasks. Eventually young knights and college students in the area became frequent visitors, and Catalina took on the role of a quest giver for them, whether that be asking for extra milk in return for help with homework or parroting a true quest from the King on high, he found pleasure in a successful mission.

Over time, he developed a love for tactile games, and would regularly host TTRPG nights for the patrons, an endeavor he slowly moved online to reach a wider audience through twitch streams, throwing other slower paced games such as Tetris and chess into the rotation for a growing audience.

The bar was a huge hit with the LARP. Slowly regulars emerged, and Catalina in the familiarity and safety of his own home was able to reach out without a script for once. After seeing Reece Saetang and Yulia Skitter sitting in the same place, at the same time, doing the same thing for months, he forced himself to reach out, and ended up being enveloped in their small group, becoming inseparable with the pair.

Time on the Lovers

He watched fondly as his two close friends joined the Lovers, remembering his time watching the legends in the making return to the field and grow, but it wasn't until Yulia's rough introduction to the team that he remembered why he left Avalon in the first place. He couldn't watch it force itself through each game, damning the umps, and in the dead of the night swapped with it to become the Lovers new leadoff batter.

His relationship with the team was shaky at first, due at part to his unfamiliarity with the game and the stress of season 24, but he quickly found himself bonding with another older player for the team, Silvia Winner. Together they got the Lovers playing all sorts of TTRPGs, and on rare occasions, would even stream together.

He was mostly left to his own devices on the team until day 65 of his first season, where, after a misheard joke from Winner on third, hit a ground out letting her advance, collecting 10 runs and nullifying Party Time. After this, he was a legend among the normal party frenzied Lovers.

Triva

  • Catalina prefers listening to people talk than adding anything himself, he will listen to his friends infodump for hours if they aren't stopped.
  • When he left Avalon, his mother granted him an imperfect bat she had made named Secace. It has no extraordinary properties, he just really liked the idea of it having a cute name. He keeps it hanging above the bar.
  • He's a huge stickler for doing things by the book, but isn't above using the rules to his friends' advantage to make sure everyone is having a good time. Both in the sport and in the TTRPGs he runs.
  • He still feels bad about destroying Party Time, even if he wasn’t a fan of the rule itself (or parties in general for that matter) learning how important it was to the sport still stung.
  • Catalina gets along well with teammate Jacob Winner, even offering him a job as the bar’s chef.
