Donia Bailey is a player in the Shadows for the LA Unlimited Tacos, and has been with the team since Fall Ball. Bailey has previously played for the Houston Spies.

Official League Records

Bailey joined the ILB as a pitcher for the Houston Spies with the Return of Blaseball.

Bailey retreated to the Shadows after being replaced Evelton McBlase II as a result of the Party Line blessing in the Season β6 elections. Bailey had not been incinerated, and, along with Mike Townsend in the same election, was one of the first players to exit active play without being incinerated.

During the Season β21 elections, Bailey's defense increased from 2.5 3.8 as a result of the Spies' Shadow Infuse will.

During the Season β22 elections, Bailey's baserunning increased from 2.3 3.8 as a result of the Spies' Shadow Infuse will.

On Season β23, Day 51, The Solarium Thieves' Guild stole Bailey from the Houston Spies and gave them to the Hellmouth Sunbeams.

During the December 30, 2022 Fall Ball, Bailey fell to the LA Unlimited Tacos.

On Season 2, Day 10, Erin Beanbag crashed into Bailey during a game in Horizon weather, knocking Bailey into the Tacos' Shadows.

History

Donia Bailey is referred to in all official documents relating to the Houston Spies as a double agent. It is generally agreed that one of the entities for which they are an agent is the Spies, where they played as a pitcher. There is no general consensus on whether the Spies are her primary employer or the victim of her double crossing. It is even less clear what other organisation they may be an agent for, since on a surface level their activities do not appear to be especially helpful to anyone, let alone a rival team.

Bailey has revealed only basic details about her original mission after being discovered, citing her "undying loyalty to [her] agency and homeland." She claims that she was originally hired to play as a batter, but was reassigned to the role of pitcher just before her first game. Bailey considered this to be an act of sabotage "done only to make [her] miserable, because [she] can't throw a blaseball to save [her] life."

Since they have not yet returned to whatever headquarters they may have been issued from, and assuming that they are totally loyal to the Spies is, in the words of Spies player Alexandria Rosales, "a fool's gambit," speculation has ensued that Bailey has gone native, eschewing their original employer out of emotional attachment to their new team. However, this line of thinking may prove to be equally dangerous, since it has not been conclusively proven that Bailey is capable of love.

Bailey has been asked about this issue in several interviews, but always pretends not to have heard the question. It's really annoying.

Performance

Throughout all of Seasons 1 through 6, Bailey displayed overall theoretical competence with batting, baserunning, and defense. She was also consistently the Houston Spies' worst pitcher by a considerable margin. As a result, some fans, spectators, and teammates suspect that Bailey has been intentionally throwing games[1]; the reasons why she would do this are not immediately clear, but sabotage of the Houston Spies' league performance is the most likely, with protest intended to prompt her reassignment to a batting position being the second-most likely. There is also some evidence suggesting that Bailey has solicited and received bribes.[2][3][4][5]

Relationship With Teammates

Bailey had a complicated relationship with her team before departing into the Shadows. By all accounts, including her own, the other players for the Houston Spies consistently treated her with respect and comity. Houston Spies management, however, has attempted to assassinate Bailey on a nearly daily basis, leaving her isolated and unable to fully trust her teammates. Over time, Bailey became more comfortable with other Spies, especially Teddy Holloway, Son Scotch, Math Velazquez, Fitzgerald Blackburn, and Alexandria Rosales. While Bailey never quite found her place within the Houston Spies organization proper, she was never truly alone playing the splort.

In fact, Bailey joined both Holloway and Rosales on the Houston Shells, the local roller derby team. Bailey played as "Dosvidonia," a resilient blocker, before her departure to the Shadows. Though numerous players have tried out to replace her, none have yet managed to take up her mantle.

Evidence suggests that her teammates' kind treatment did not convince Bailey to remain on the team longer than she had to. The arrival of Evelton McBlase II gave Bailey an opening to escape, and she took it, retreating into the Shadows alongside Garages pitcher Mike Townsend. Bailey has since sent extremely limited communications from the shadows into which she retreated, sending as much useful intelligence as she could gather—while also expressing that she "miss[es] you [the other players for the Spies]" and hoped to see them again in person before any were incinerated.

Disappearance

Toward the end of Season 6, Donia Bailey vanished from the Spies lineup and promotional material. Mysteriously enough, this disappearance aligns perfectly with the appearance of Evelton McBlase II. Some theorize that Bailey is related in some way to the bizarre doppelganger. When asked, a representative from the Spies placed a small strip of blank, tear-soaked printer paper on the table and left the building.

Some reports suggest that Bailey has launched an independent investigation into the Shadows, using McBlase II's appearance to slip away. Though limited communication from Bailey suggests she is not enjoying her time in the Shadows, her remark to teammate Marco Escobar just before she disappeared—"I'm doing this because I want to, not because of any stupid prophecy."—suggests there was some level of agency involved. What Bailey has found in the Shadows and whether she will ever return remains to be seen.
